jotabecu Posted October 29, 2010 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2010 We are booked on Veendam 18 March 2011. I have been trying, unsuccessfully to get some ideas as to independent tour operators in Recife, Belem, Fortaleza, Santarem and Manaus. Any contacts you can share? Thanks. dfb Posted October 29, 2010 #2 Share Posted October 29, 2010 These are all (except Manaus) very small, isolated towns or villages with not a lot of tourism, or other, infrastructure. It would not surprise me if when cruise ships arrive that tour guides are imported to handle the business, that is the reason for your experience, I believe from my own experiences before, during and after cruising the area. In Manaus, we used Amazon Explorers and made our arrangements in their office in the Cruise Passengers Terminal building. Good luck.
jotabecu Posted October 30, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted October 30, 2010 Recife, Belem and Fortaleza have over one million people each, the tourism infrastucture may not be well developed, but I am sure there must be tour operators looking for business out there. anameia Posted November 2, 2010 #5 Share Posted November 2, 2010 Jotabecu, Recife and Fortaleza are very well known tourism destinations and I am sure you'll find a lot to do in both cities. In Recife you can visit Olinda, a city full of history, beautiful churches and with a breathtaking view not only of the ocean, but also of Recife. You should also try to visit the old part of the city called "Recife Antigo", where you can visit the oldest synagogue in Brazil, for example. Fortaleza is also full of interesting things to do, but if you like beaches you should try to visit "Praia do Futuro", which is the beach locals go. A cultural sight is "Centro Cultural Dragão do Mar". I am sure that you'll find a fine tourism infrastructure in both cities and enjoy you stay there. Hope I could help you a little.
