bowsi Posted June 17, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I am in the process of planning a 2005 cruise for eight individuals with three cabins - one double occupancy and two triple occupancy. The 3rd passenger in the first cabin is 31 years old, the other cabin will have a 5 year old. My question - the quote I received for the third passenger is the same for each cabin. The rep I am using emailed me saying that there is not a price difference for child vs. adult. Is this correct? Typically I've found at land based resorts the charge for a child is less than an adult. BTW, this will be our seventh cruise but first one with our son! Thanks for any and all help. Travel Angel Posted June 17, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2004 This is typical for all cruiselines (except possibly Disney Cruiseline) as the 3d or 4th passenger rate is treated the same regardless of age of pax. Folgy Posted June 18, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 18, 2004 On a cruise ship a child takes up just as much space as an Adult and is much more work for Room attendants and dining room attendants. It all equates out the same in dollars and cents to the cruise lines. Alaska (my BIG 50)Serenade of the Seas

Rare GaryWT Posted June 18, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 18, 2004 In my situation, I put my 3 kids in 1 room and pay full price for the 1st 2 and 3rd person rate for the 3rd. Does not matter what the age is. 3/98 Grandeur of the Seas 4/00 Grandeur of the Seas 2/02 Enchantment of the Seas 04/16/05 Navigator of the Seas

The difference is that, somehow, land-based establishments have long-standing policies regarding charges for children, contrary to the kind of rational logic you've outlined here. I bet, if we researched it a bit, we'd find that it all started with some early (probably 1950s) Holiday Inn promotion. Cruise lines evidently never had the need to distort their pricing model to specifically attract families with young children. RCI - Serendade of the Seas (S. Carib.) BaumD Posted June 18, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 18, 2004 Cruise lines actually make less money on the kids than the adult. They would much rather have an adult as a third person than a child. When was the last time you saw a 6 year old lose $600 in the casino, spend $30 per day on pina coladas, buy a ring in the jewelry shop, spend $1000 at the art auction? There is logic behind it. The only breaks the cruise lines give kids are on the excursions where they know the parents will pay full price as the kids can't go alone. pieshops Posted June 18, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 18, 2004 the reason they charge the same price is that the coast guard certifies the ship for a certain number of passengers, regardless of age. If half the ship is kids on one sailing, and they charge less, they make a lot less money. The only line i know of from personal experience that charges less is NCL, they only charge port charges for children under a certain age. I know there is another line that does the same but i can not think of it. Tatka Posted June 18, 2004 #10 Share Posted June 18, 2004 Many land resorts charge less for a child upto 11 years old, and then it's full price. I'd rather pay 3rd person price on ship for my 12 years old than adult price on land. ------------------------------

Zuiderdam 8/21/04 FLL - Key West - Cozumel - Grand Caymans - Half Moon Cay - FLL
Splendour of the Seas 05/15/04 Barcelona - Marseilles - Villefranche - Livorno - Chivitavecchia - Naples - Barcelona
Century 07/12/03 Eastern Caribbean FFL-San Juan - St. Thomas - St.Maarten- Nassau -FFL
Komarno(Volga)07/91 Moscow - Astrahan' - Moscow (honeymoon)
Komarno(Volga)07/90 Moscow - Astrahan'- Moscow
Admiral Nachimov(or Nakhimov) (Black Sea)04/1986 Odessa - Batum GO BRUINS!!!!
