Better Beach Day or Touring Day?

Hi,

St.Kitts is one of eight ports on a December Cruise the others being St. Croix, Barbados, Aruba, Curacao, Antigua, Dominica and Grenada.

Any feedback if St.Kitts would be a better beach or tour day? Thanks for any of your thoughts.

 Cheers!

You will get many opinions on this because its all very personal. For example, we have been to the Caribbean many times (we are talking about forty+ years of extensive travel) and look at every Caribbean island as a beach/snorkel day. We think most of the tours are boring (we can look at trees at home) but others love the tour thing. As to places that you might find interesting we think Dominica has some fascinating unspoiled scenary (water falls, streams, etc) which you can probably do cheaper than the cruise line by simply hiring a taxi at the pier (this works best with a group of 4). Barbados also has Harrisons Cave which is pretty neat,,,,although we prefer the beaches. Aruba is a great beach port (we prefer Eagle Beach) but the back-side of the island has a dessert landscape that reminds many of the moon. It can be a lot of fun to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle and just drive this side of the island. You can do this on a typical overpriced tour or simply arrange (online) to rent a vehicle and just go off by yourself (very easy with a map). Curacao gives you a bunch of options most of which is based on the water and the beach. On our most recent visit (3 weeks ago) we rented a car (the first time we did this on this island) and drove about 25 miles from the port to find some interesting desserted beaches with excellent snorkeling (we love to snorkel and carry our own gear). But many are happy just walking around town (within walking distance of the ship). St Croix is another beach destination with one beach within walking distance of the ship pier.

I would go with a tour day! The beaches we saw were not very good and don't bother with your snorkelling gear! We took a tour with Thetford Grey and viewed the Brimstone Hill Fortress and all over the Island! A great tour and highly recommended!

I got a day pass to the Marriot hotel. It was an amazing beach day. The scenery was gorgeous. The water had waves, which I love. The grounds of the hotel were beautiful. The pools were nice, there was a casino. I went with my mom, and she wants to go back for a land vacation. We visited 7 islands and did 6 excursions, and this was her favorite.

We did an island tour this past week with Junie's tours for $20 pp and they dropped us off at the beach at the end for 2 hours (which is plenty of beach time for us) and came back and picked us up and returned us to the port. It was a very nice tour and the ocean overview points they stopped at were simply breathtaking! This was one of our favorite islands!

On any cruise I like to vary the activities so we are not doing the same thing every day. While we cannot do extremely active sports (no zip lines or kayaks for me!) moderate hikes, sailing and swimming are fine. One day I would love to tour and take in the history, architecture & scenery, while the next day I might prefer to be snorkeling in a secluded cove. I try to identify what each island is best known for when I visit for the first time and concentrate on that if possible.

This itinerary includes Antigua (we have been there and we did an eco tour on water. This time we want to do a land tour), St. Lucia (new to us), Barbados (new to us), St. Kitts (new to us), St. Thomas (been there 3X before - beach day) and Princess Cayes (beach day).

So what would be our best bet for St. Kitts - a tour with an hour or two at the beach or a day sail to Nevis? So hard to decide.....but we have lots of time to plan!

We went with Rose & Jims Taxi & Tours. We got to see all the highlights of the Island including Brimstone Hill Fortrese, Romney Gardens,Caribele Batik, & great ocean views at the Black Rocks and finished off at the Reggae Beach Bar at Cockleshell beach. You can check them out here: http://www.roseandjimstaxi.com/ourtours.htm I highly recomend them.
