travlnblueberries Posted November 18, 2010 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2010 We have sailed out from florida, and san juan and new york, I was looking at a cruise sailing out of new orleans. I was looking for someone who have sailed out of new orleans from philly and what did you think of this port? Can I ask if your flight is less than or more than florida or san juan? Would you sail out of this port again? And where did you stay pre-cruise? Thanks so much!
sjcruiser Posted November 18, 2010 #2 Share Posted November 18, 2010 I would be interested in this also. I havent been to N.O. since before Katrina, and would love to get back there to do a couple days precruise. As a note, it was my first and only time in N.O. and I stayed a few blocks from the French Quarter. I had a hike each day from my hotel to the convention center, but it was well worth the walk as I got to learn my way around the area, taking the long way back to my hotel each afternoon/evening. Budget Queen Posted November 18, 2010 #3 Share Posted November 18, 2010 This is an excellent port for cruising from. I have done it three times. Be selective on where you stay and be certain it is where you want to be for your touring priorities. I stay most of the time in the CBD, and take the cheap public transportation everywhere, including walking from the airport Jefferson bus stop. :) (rather than taking a costly cab :) ) I walk to all my preferred nighttime activities, since I am only 1 block off of Canal. The Quarter is actually a very big area, if you have mobility limitations. And you can figure on walking many blocks during a course of touring. It is an area of superb food choices, unique and not gotten elsewhere. I have been going 1-2 /year since 1994, with a miss in 2005. The quarter is completely "normal". I drive the outlying areas, and they are still in a state of disrepair.
travlnblueberries Posted November 19, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted November 19, 2010 Thank you for replying. We are looking into sailing out of new Orleans for something different for us. I'm a bit leery about our safety. And I'm not great looking up flights, so I'm not sure how much the flight will be from philly or NY. I'm waiting for DH to look for the info about flights/price. I was surprised that san juan was as much as florida. I thought sj would have been more money for the flight.

Hi travlenblueberries I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm still wondering what happen in St Thomas on your last cruise. I will be there in January, and I'm a bit concerned!:o
CPT Trips Posted November 22, 2010 #6 Share Posted November 22, 2010 NOLA from PHL requires a stopover/plane change . . . I last looked about 2 months ago and there were no nonstop flights. SJU, FLL or TPA all have n/s from PHL. NOLA is fine if you stay in/near the Quarter and it's an easy port. IIRC, taxi to from airport are flat rates. travlnblueberries Posted November 24, 2010 Author #8 Share Posted November 24, 2010 Hi travlenblueberries I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm still wondering what happen in St Thomas on your last cruise. I will be there in January, and I'm a bit concerned!:o We were robbed while in St. Thomas on a cruise sponsored tour. On that post, I wanted to inform travelers,... have the police come right to where the crime happened. We were given WRONG information by patrol. They logged the crime, but told us we had to go down town to the police station to file a report.(This is incorrect, you tell them you want the police to come to you) To make a long story short, (and believe me it's long) they had the gangway already pulled up while we were still with the police. The ship had to wait till we were done with the police before they could sail away. We were escorted to the gangway by the police, as they lowered it for us to get back on the ship. Also do not let the cruise line (and this means any of them) try and talk you out of filing a police report. As I said in the other post...they are only concerned about their reputation, not your well being! We had another cruise since that happened and I'm glad we weren't stopping there. What use to be a very enjoyable port for us, now has left us with a bad taste. And the conversation we had with the police and what they were telling us of the island....well, all I could say is the next time we have St. Thomas as a port of call will be too soon for us!
