Can anyone help me on the specifics of the collectivos and the bus in Playa Del Carmen? We will be on a tight budget and would like more info on the available alternative means of transport. My gut feeling is to take the Carnival sponsered tour to Coba, but it looks like we could save alot by doing alone.

I asked this same question and received one answer which stated that the collectivos are vans/busses that drive the main highways with their lights on. You need to hold up your hand if you want them to stop for you. Other than that I don't know anything about them. I would also like to use this method of transport when I am in PDC this spring.
