High Water on Main River in Germany

Am aboard the River Duchess (Uniworld - Cologne to Nuremberg) and the ship has been unable to continue our route since Sunday due to high water. There is a low bridge ahead under which we could not pass by a margin of 60 cm. We are docked in Frankfort and have been bused to and from our planned ports each day.

 

Uniworld is doing all they can to make the best of it. But yesterday was 2.5 hours each way in a bus to visit Rothenberg. The river is falling, but slowly. As of last night, the river remains 40 cm. too high for us to pass.

Sorry your trip has been disrupted. Rothenburg is a long way from the river and is always a long bus trip for Rhine/Main cruisers.

If you are tired of bus trips in traffic you could use the very efficient German passenger rail service to explore the area independently. Can't remember the URL for DE rail but, like the service itself, it is very easy to use.

We had to leave Regensburg way ahead of schedule last week due to the rapid rise of the water as the snow melted. Sorry your trip is being affected.

 

We took several independent train trips on our cruise this month. Trains are excellent and easy to use in most cases. The Deutsche Bahn site is http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?rt=1&

I can sympathize-we were on the Main 3 bridges short of the Rhine and were bussed to Cologne and Amsterdam. This year we were stuck for 2 days In Deggendorf because of high water

I would be very careful advising people to take the trains or take to the roads by themselves with all the snow being around in Germany. For locals, conditions are still ok, but for somebody who is not familiar with roads or trains in Germany I would advise against DIY travel at this time. Road conditions are manageable at the moment but not ideal. Train travellers are faced with difficult conditions. The main problems seem to be that there is so much snow on the platforms the trains have problems opening the doors at stations.
