Checkin at airport?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done the day before check-in or have you checked in on the day at the Cruise section according to my tickets you check-in then you just walk straight through to arrivals at the other end and your bags are next seen in your cabin. Is this new?

Hello again NWC,

Yes, done the day before at Gatwick. It was brilliant!!!! I think it's only open for flights leaving in the morning of the next day (which the Caribbean ones will - we hope, snow permitting! ) and operates between 12.00 and 22.00.

We travelled by National Express, got out at Departures N terminal, walked straight in up to an empty Thomson check-in desk and just checked our hold luggage in. Done and dusted within ten minutes of arrival at Gatwick!!! On this occasion though we have to pick up our cabin number stickers from the Thomson information desk in the airport to put them on our cases prior to check in but even so, our experience earlier this year was superb! Fingers crossed all goes as easily this time!! :)

The next morning we arrived just over an hour before departure - just queued to get through security and had a very short time in the departures lounge before our flight was called (not much time for shopping though - may have to adjust that :D ). It was lovely not to have to join all the huge check-in queues next morning though to say nothing of an extra hour or so in bed!

The bit about your cases being delivered direct to your cabin was the same arrangement as when we went to the Caribbean on Destiny. We left the plane, were escorted out of a side gate at the airport and never even went into the airport building! It may not be quite as quick as that this time (depending on the arrangements at Bridgetown) but at least it will be a great deal faster than having to wait for luggage reclaim. :)

When we went on Sea Princess in January, we flew with Thomas Cook. We checked our cases in at Gatwick and didn't see them again until we got to our cabins when we boarded at Barbados. So I think this is more a "Barbados thing" than who you fly with. Hope so, as we fly with Thomsons in February to go on the Braemar. I don't know if any other airports do this:confused::confused:

It was La Romana in the Dom Rep when we experienced this arrangement. It will be interesting to find out if the same is the case for the Dream flights into Jamaica and Cuba for the other itineraries. It's too early to expect any reports back yet. I hope they have all enjoyed their TA - they should be in the Caribbean by now - or close to it. Lovely and warm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Checked in day before at Manchester both times. Had to pay for the short stay car park near the departures entrance but were out in 10 minutes both times so it was worth it. You can't check in before 12 noon though. We went straight to check-in, got our boarding cards with windows seats and then along to the end to have our bags taken through, then went home. Had an extra hour in bed then back to the airport next day with our hand luggage, smugly waltzed past the queue and straight to passport control. After that it was as per normal with collection of luggage at destination, then to the ship where the luggage was taken off us and delivered later to our cabins. Easy peasy!:):)

According to my brochure they don't get there 'til Monday. Antigua - 8am:D

While I envy them the sunshine, I don't think I would like 6 days at sea:eek:

I have used the day before check-in at Gatwick and it is a great idea if you are staying in a hotel overnight. For my January Destiny cruise I will have the luxury of a proper breakfast in the hotel and then stroll over to north Terminal and straight to passport control. Hopefully I won't see my case until it arrives in my cabin.

Should be getting warmer though! But I do agree with you 6 sea days are not my cup of tea either. I can see that it may suit some - but I much prefer to have port intensive trips - appeals to my nosiness!!!!!!! :o To say nothing of how many Stugeron I'd need!!!!:D

Same here, lol. Don't like full ships, nowhere to sit, restaurants crammed.

Yes, not sure what the arrangements will be the first couple of days (i.e things 'to do': muster drill, port showcase etc.) especially as the first day is not a sea day (it's more predictable then!) but it would be good to say 'Hi'. :)

We tried to check in at Gatwick the night before our Caribbean cruise on the Destiny in February this year but we were turned away! The staff on the desk advised that we had to check in the following morning as we had to answer the usual medical questions. There was no way they would check us in. We had also been advised by our travel agents that we could check in night before so we had a wasted journey and had to pay to park which soon adds up at Gatwick!:mad:

We are going again in January so any advice out there?

That's not good!!!!! :( We used the service in February for the Red Sea itinerary and was hoping to do the same for the Caribbean in January too. What questions did you have to answer jo lou? I don't remember anything about medical questions when we did the Destiny Caribbean - and why couldn't you answer them the day before? Sounds like a real mess-up! Hmmmmmm............ I hope they've got their act together now!

It was a nonsense really as when we went back to check in the following morning they didn't ask us anything at all!! I think previously we have been asked something like ...... have we had any recent sickness bugs etc - but who is going to say "yes" anyway!! When are you going in January? We go on 23rd so if you are back by then, it would be good to know how you got on?

Enjoy:):):)

I am on the Destiny on the 23rd Jan, and was also looking to check in the day before, but I have just found this info on the Thomsons sight

Q: If I’m flying with Thomson Airways to join a Thomson/First Choice operated cruise (that’s Island Cruises or Thomson Cruises), can I use Day Before Check-in?

A: Yes, just follow the normal procedure, with one exception. If you’re flying out to join a Thomson Cruise in La Romana (Dominican Republic), we’re really sorry, but due to baggage and medical screening requirements, this service isn’t availablable.

That might explain your problem, jo lou as you would be going to the Dom Rep to join the Destiny. I wonder if we can infer from this that the early check-in is therefore still a possibility for flights to the Dream?

It's nothing much - just a few questions like ..... have you had any sickness bugs recently. We have done this trip several times - just make sure you give the right answer whatever if you know what I mean (unless you are unfortunate enough to be not well on the day)!!! Enjoy :):):)

We have done night before check-in at MAN which is free and great if you are on any morning Thomson flight. We live close to the airport so it's great to have extra time in bed then just got straight thru security with your boarding passes already in hand. We just then had to confirm at boarding gate we had turned up as advance luggage was kept separate then. Not used it on a cruise before though
