Wea re going on Veendam March 2011 Rio to Ft Lauderdale.

I have been searching the boards and previous similar trips on CC and have not been able to find contacts for independent tour operators in Belem, Recife,Parintins, Santarem, etc.

Would somebody be able to provide any suggestions?

I'm sure you'll find lots of tours upon arrival. We reside in Fortaleza and saw Belem mainly on our own (my wife attended a conference there). Not a big city. You can find lots of guide books to read up in advance. The former port area has been renovated and has lots of shops and restaurants, and a beautiful walkway. Area is Estação das Docas. There's also a new park area that has live butterfly and other exhibits you walk through. We took a short evening boat tour. How much time will you have there? We didn't take a tour except for a bus tour, but had the time (and language) to do it on our own.

Haven't been to Santarem, but it was mentioned a lot in a book I just read about former Confederate soldiers and their families who emigrated to Brazil after the Civil War ("The last Colony of the Confederacy," which I got from Amazon.com; there are other books, and online sources, about the same topic, and I should note the book's main focus wasn't on Santarem).

Ship will be in Belem 10 am to 6 pm , I will probably follow your advice and hire a taxi for 2-3 hours.

Spanish is my language and I know I can get myself understood and use a few words from my limited Portuguese.
