Princess Cruises Smoking Policy-Conflicting Advice

Maybe you have. My wife puts out her cigarette when she hears the next door start to slide open and comes in from the balcony. And she limits her cigarettes to less than half their length to limit the smoke. I would prefer she quit entirely, but she does try. Many of our friends have no idea she still smokes, since she never smokes around them.

As vehment anti-smokers my husband and I were mortified to find out that Princess allows smoking in cabins and on basically the whole ship. I contacted my travel agent who was also not impressed. She then called Princess who assured her smoking was only allowed in designated areas, at the captains discretion and ususally only at the back of the ship, definatly not in the cabins. But having spent an hour on the internet looking at all possible cruise related websites, their policy still comes up as allowed in cabins and pretty much anywhere anyone wants to light up. As first time cruises my excitement is now turning to dread.

And I have never smelt so much as a whiff of smoke ( and

I'm very anti/ sensitive to it) mind you I don't go in the casino and I've never

noticed it on the balcony either.

I love to sit and lounge at the aft rail of the boat and enjoy the fresh breezy air while watching the wake disappear into the horizon. Almost every cruise, there is one guy who finds some empty lounge in the middle of everyone else lounging on the stern and lights up the most obnoxious, stenchful cigar. Their stinking smoke permeates almost the whole aft pool/sunning area! People like that should be keelhauled IMHO. I find their insensivity to their fellow passengers to be beyond offensive.

Just keep in mind that, according to Princess' policy, smokers are only doing what they are allowed to do. If you get annoyed with anyone, it should be Princess and not the smoker(s).

 

This is one of the best lines I've seen on a smoking thread and it is so true! I don't waste my time posting on these threads because I want to make smokers feel bad about themselves for being a smoker. I post on these threads because I know Princess reads (some of) them and I want my voice heard at every opportunity.

 

I'm still not quite sure what motivates people to keep returning to a line whose policies they do not like when there are so many similar alternatives. Be that as it may, until smoking is banned completely there will continue to be this push-and-pull discussion.

 

 

If there are five things particular to Princess that I really, really love, and there is ONE thing about Princess that I really, really dislike, why would I leave? It would be cutting off my nose to spite my face. I choose to be very vocal and attempt to get that ONE thing fixed. Cruise lines will come around eventually, it's just a matter of patience. I'm sure they're all keeping a good eye on Celebrity right now.;) I hope this answers your question of motivation!

....There is no practical solution. Carnival tried a smoke-free ship and gave up. They concluded that smokers tend to spend more money on board so why discourage them from sailing?

But there is a practical solution and Celebrity has found it! Carnival was too far ahead of the times and too drastic. Carnival's attempt at smoke-free failed because it was over ten years ago (ship debuted in 1998) and it was COMPLETELY non-smoking. Times and laws have changed dramatically since 1998 and those that continue to smoke do need a lounge to go to that doesn't impact the vast majority, which is the non-smokers!

 

I think in this day and age, the non-smokers have reached such a majority that they can now support the bars and the casinos just fine (as they are doing on almost all ships (bar) and Celebrity (casino).

I guess people are just different. I only complain about something if it REALLY bothers me. And if it REALLY bothers me, then it would be difficult for me to enjoy my (hard earned) vacation, hence I would look for an alternative. I only get about 3 weeks of vacation a year, and if something was so upsetting me that I was posting on a message board repeatedly about it, well....:o (Not singling you out, just making a general statement about me.)

 

As I think I mentioned in another thread, I've cruised with Princess since before they were Princess, and trust me there are probably 50 things I like about the line. But I can't deal with their mattresses any longer, so I have stopped booking cruises with them. It's not a matter of "boycotting" them, as was said. It's because I want to enjoy my vacation. There are alternatives out there that have 50 good things about them too (albeit maybe not the same 50), plus no aching back.

 

My mission in life isn't to get Princess to change their policy, it's just to enjoy my vacation. And for those who think Princess is irreplaceable, they are not. ;)

Run as fast asyou can and rebook on a different line. Also find a more knowledgabe ta as yours seems to be lacking.

For those passengers who would like to enjoy a cigar or pipe, Churchill's Lounge is located

on Promenade, Deck 7, Midship. Smoking cigars or pipes outside of this lounge is not

permitted. Outdoor smoking areas are clearly posted throughout the vessel. Although

smoking is permitted in staterooms and balconies, it is discouraged as a safety precaution

and as a courtesy to the next occupants of your stateroom. You are also kindly reminded

to respect your fellow passengers, particularly when smoking on the balcony.

Seriously? Is there anyone left on this planet who doesn't realize that everyone has serious physical issues regarding smoke in the air? There is really no longer any serious debate about the fact that cigarette smoke is a very serious health risk.

 

 

I think it's a shame that this debate continues. Smokers have rights, absolutely but when you impact the health of others then the line becomes a bit fuzzy. 2nd hand smoke is a health hazard. That matters to me, why doesn't it matter to the smoker:confused:. Just curious. I know I can sail another line but my question is how can the health of other people be ignored? Perhaps it is because we are strangers but your loved ones are exposed too. Just makes me scratch my head.... I don't get it:rolleyes:
