Safety in Mexican ports

My reports tell me that all American and Canadians tourists return from Mexico with heads still attached, maybe a few brain cells gone through:eek:

Too funny! How was your trip? How many brain cells did you kill with those wonderful margaritas down there?

Trip was beyond wonderful :) I killed enough brain cells in Vegas before the cruise so was kinda sort of well behaved for the cruise, that said, I did make a dent in the qood quality tequila down there :D

Really enjoyed Acapulco (but really??? It was NOTHING like Go-mexico or Dforgwhat'shisname talk about), I didn't see one one drug cartal, dead headless body, violent drug crazed criminal, or anything, instead I met many warm gentle people, saw many wonderful beaches and sites I am really confused as to where they are coming from cause their version of Acapulco is NOT what *I* saw...Do I ask for my money back????? Could they reallybe lying about this wonderful city and it really is safe for us cruisers??? Somehow I think it is :)

I really fell in love with Zihua this might give PV a run for it's money as I want to go back there NOW, in PV revisted Mismaloya all over again, Tony had to stay on ship for Mazatlan so I went to Stone Island with a friend and was wrapped in a towel all the time there

Come over to Trip Advisor and private message me so I can give you my email address.....last time I tried to do it here...I had someone on this Mex Riv forum who hates me, saw my email address and gave it to alot of porn sites...I got spammed for awhile and yes we are pretty sure we know who did it.

"I live very close to the man who was shot in bc. We are going to the mexican riviera in a few weeks. I am conserned about Mazatlan. We have booked a ship excurtion to a beach resort, but we get there by taxi's & it is in the golden zone. I just wonder if we should stay at the port this time & Cancel the excursion. It isn't just because of this shooting, I was conserned before." (posted by merinski)

Each of us makes our own risk assessment when we travel. What's okay for me may be unacceptable to you. I've no doubt there are many more visitors victimized than we read about. Most of this goes unreported. Just last night another Canadian couple from Orillia, Ontario who'd been vacationing in Mazatlan, or the Mazatlan area, stepped forward to report that they and two other persons taking part in a guided ATV tour were taken into custody by armed terrorists and robbed - but not physically harmed. They said they spoke-out about the Christmas visit attack after hearing of the shooting in Mazatlan. This is why we often hear of incidents bunched together. They don't always happen at the same time but they filter-out once a larger incident takes place. Learn what you can from this and other incidents and then make your decisions about visits, excursions, and other travel plans.

Was the atv tour from the ship or private do you know?

At the moment we have been thinking that we should be ok with a ship tour to a golden zone resort, but we will keep watching, and may have to change. I have been checking the maz messanger.

I don't know if the four persons attacked were cruise line passengers. My "gut" feeling from the report I watched tells me no, though I don't think the victims said one way or another. I also don't know if the company which organized the ATVs and which was supposedly leading the tour was one which also offers its services to cruise line passengers.

It really doesn't matter if you book a "ship" tour or book it privately. Chances are it is going to be the same company.

So glad you had a wonderful time. I loved Zihua when I visits a few years back too. I'd love to go back. I also enjoyed Acapulco.

How do I private message you on Trip Advisor?

Merinski we are going on the same cruise as you are. I have become very concerned about the violence in Mazatlan as well. We have scheduled a walking tour through Carnival but are thinking of canceling that and maybe do some shopping if it is nearby the port.

Do you or anyone know if there is any shops near the port?

I agree wholeheartedly with househunters comments......

People need to read the crime stats in their own cities before they condemn and Mexican city an unsafe. 99% of all crime is committted against people involved in the drug business in Mexico. Extremely rare to be an innocent bystander.......same probability in small town USA

Hi, I haven't seen you on the roll call pg. But, I'm fairly quite on there anyway. I answered your question already somewhere else, but you may not have seen it yet. yes there is a nice flea market right at the terminal. You just take a little trolly ride from the ship to the terminal & it is just outside the main building, but I think it is still in a secure area. We have wondered about doing the same.:)

Agree!

We do keep an eye on alerts from the State Dept and the Embassy, just so we'll know what to be aware of: http://mexico.usembassy.gov/eng/eacs_MexicoSecurityUpdate.html

It's a little like reading our local crime report to know where the risks may be.
