St. Thomas - Packed w/Cruisers?

I read in Frommer's that St. Thomas has cruisers packed in like sardines, with two piers that the ships come in at. Has anyone else experienced crowding? Also, I read that you have to step over people at the beach. However, there are loads of shops. This is our first cruise and what can we do besides shop in St. Thomas and watch out for the pick pockets?

If you don't like crowded beaches try Smith Bay, Sapphire or Secret Harbor. I wouldn't worry too much about PickPockets. They are all but non existent in St Thomas/St John. Take the normal precautions you would elsewhere when traveling and you'll be fine.

Now if you were going to Italy....

Take a tour with one of the guides reccommended on this site. Papa Bear from Air Force One is excellent. Those tours run around $40. per person and can include beach time. They are small groups so usually have flexibility.

Thanks for your quick responses. I took your advice and checked out his website and sent him a note.
