Food in Greece

Are there many food street vendors (or any markets)? We'd like to sample some of the local food without spending too much money and thought that street vendors might be able to afford us such luxury. And/Or does anyone of any advice on what we must try or restaurants we should go to (that are relatively cheap) in ports? We'll be in: Piraeus (Athens), Greece, Rhodes, Greece and Chania (Souda), Crete, Greece. Thanks all!

The 'street vendors' sell KOULOURI like a large bagel but with sesame seeds instead of salt or maybe charcoal grilled corn-on-the-cob. Sometimes outside of a bakery they sell spinach pie, cheese pie, bougatsa and meat pies.

An inexpensive way to eat is at a SOUVLAKI shop you can buy pitta bread wrap with 2x KALAMAKI (meat-on-a-stick) or GYROS with everything - tsatsiki, fries, onion and tomatoes for about 2 Euros.

In Athens check out PLAKA & MONASTERAKI areas there are many tavernas and souvlaki places there.
