Bikes in St. Croix

Has anyone rented bicycles on their own to ride around St. Croix? I see RCCL has the bike tour but I'm not sure we want to do that, but thought just renting bikes on our own would be fun...

Thoughts?

We thought about it, but after seeing the roads there, I'd rather be protected by a couple thousand pounds of steel. If you stay in town, fine.. but the roads out of town are pot-holed, narrow, no shoulders to speak of.

Just wanted to add... Centerline Road would be OK for bike safety. It's wide and straight, with some shoulders. You could ride out to visit the Botanical Gardens on Centerline. The other roads all looked dangerous to me. Heck, I was even a little scared driving them in a heavy 4WD Jeep.

We did the bike tour offered as RCCL excursion. (see other posting).

 

I believe that you can rent bikes from Freedom City Cycle so you could do it on your own touring. The bike tour rode north out of town on Hams Bluff Rd (Rte 63). There wasn't a lot of traffic and the road conditions were okay. I had less concern riding in St Croix than at home on our own city streets.
