Room key question on gem

I saw on the epic that you needed your room card to turn on lights and maybe airconditioning. Is this true also on the Gem. I was watching the Boss show where the CEO of NCL was on. Great show by the way.

Within NCL, this system only exists on the Epic. I am sure as more new ships are built this will be used as it is being used in newer hotel builds.

You need your room key to enter the room, not turn on any lights. You also need your key to charge anything on the ship like drinks, things bought in any of the shops, etc. You also need you room key getting off and on the ship. Always keep it in your pocket but don't put it in the same pocket with a cell phone. That deactivates it. We found that out the last time on the Gem (been on there 4 times) when we got locked out of our room. We had to go to the desk to get it reactivated. Hope this helps.

What are some of the advantages of using the room key as the light switch? I think having a regular light switch is alot better then using the room key

By having your room key the light switch, it automatically turns lights off when you remove the key to leave the cabin. This in turn reduces power consumption, which allows the ship to reduce fuel consumption to produce this electrical power.

This is common in many hotels in Europe. Actually in many parts of the world. Have also run into at resort hotels.

Just trying to keep use of lights, a/c, etc to a minimum.
