What Board/Card Games Do You Bring?

My husband and I really enjoyed the card room on the ship but several of the games are not complete. We ended up purchasing two decks of cards so we could play some card games.

 

Note: Do not buy a deck of cards in Cozumel. Apparently they only play with 51 cards and it makes Spades a bit difficult. :)

 

So what games and card decks do you bring to play with? I've been looking at a few travel games and want to find some fun ones for adults to play that also pack well.

 

Things I've considered:

 

  • Bananagrams (never played this but it looks fun)
  • Dominos (heavy but portable and I already have a big set at home)
  • Yahtzee
  • Scrabble travel edition
  • Quiddler
  • Liar's Dice
  • Regular deck of cards and the Hoyle Card Game book

Just a FYI for the future. If you go to the Pursors desk they will give you some free Carnival cards. Its free, go get um even if you are not playing. lol :rolleyes::D

Crap wish I knew that before! We bought a proper pack at the gift shop.

Our last 2 days were cold and rainy with one port cancelled. We were glad that we brought some small games to pass the time. There were a lot of tables that were still in a centralized location so we still felt we were part of the cruise.

On sea days sometimes you run out of stuff or the activities they offer aren't your cup of tea so it is nice to have an alternative.

 

If the purser's desk is out of cards, you can buy them from the casino for $1.

 

We like to play Uno - it's more portable than a board game and more fun than basic card games.

 

Yes I will probably bring an Uno deck even though when I mentioned it to my husband he made a face. Not sure what bad experience he had with Uno to cause that.

 

I am banned from ever playing Risk while he is around too. Apparently I'm a Risk junkie and become too competitive. Glad they don't have a travel edition of Risk or I'd sneak it on board.

 

Our last 2 days were cold and rainy with one port cancelled. We were glad that we brought some small games to pass the time. There were a lot of tables that were still in a centralized location so we still felt we were part of the cruise.

 

That is what I love - they have tables everywhere from the Lobby to the Lido deck if the card room is full so you can play a game between doing stuff on the ship. Some of the events I had no interest in doing on our sea day (shopping talk?!) but we love the trivia and name that tune stuff so we always go to those.

 

We ended up having two sea days in a row due to a cancelled port and the cards came in handy.

I would suggest the dice game "Toss Up". You can find it near the card games in the toy departments of the discount stores. "Toss Up" is fun for kids and adults and best of all, the whole container is only half the size of a deck of playing cards. You do need a piece of paper and pen for score keeping, but it is a very simple game. I think it is about $5.00 or $6.00.

 

Another small game to pack would be "LCR". It can be a gambling game, if you are so inclined. You can play for three coins instead of the included plastic chips. It is very easy to play and would also take up a very small amount of space and weight in your suitcase.

I typically don't take games on a 7 day cruise, but was planning on taking Phase 10 and a dice game called Left/Right/Center on my Transatlantic, which I don't get to do now........:(

 

Can't believe it those were the 2 exact games I was going to mention. This time I will be sailing with a large group so we will be doing LCR for dollars. Maybe I can win enough to pay my bar bill.

That's funny.......we usually just play with quarters, but it's a fun game...

EGADS! They charged you? You should be able to get decks for free!

We don't do activites any more. (Been there, done that over and over again.) We DO play games and love a nice card room. Last year Serenade of the Seas had one of the nicest card rooms ever, but we were on a very port-intensive itinerary so didn't use it as much as we would have liked. I think it's funny that if you're in a card room a lot, you'll often see the same people over and over again--all the other card (game) addicts.

 

We play a version of Canasta we call "Hand and Foot". We also play a game we call "Tricks" (Hoyle calls it "Oh Hell"). Phase 10 is fun and small. And Cribbage. We'll play Cribbage in the theater while waiting for shows.

 

We also bring a couple of board games with us (without the box). "Sequence" and "TransAmerica" are both small and easily packed.

 

We recently started playing "Speed Scrabble" or "Take Two". No Scrabble board required, just the tiles. Or you can also use the tiles from "Bananagrams". It's easy to learn (google 'Take Two rules') and the ziploc of tiles is easily packed.

 

Don't wait until the end of the cruise to get cards from the casino or they might be out. We like to get a deck or two as souvenirs and waited too long last time. :(

We play Skip-Bo!!! I plan to bring those on our upcoming cruise.

I saw people playing Skip-Bo on our last cruise.

Usually it's just the two of us cruising and DH plays spider solitaire or hearts on our laptop. This time we have his DS and her DH going with us so a game might be used.

I'm going to check out Bananagrams and the Pictureka Card game.

We played the game Apples to Apples three times at Christmas and loved it, so I want to see how large the Apples to Apples to Go game is also. We can't drive to port so things can't take up much room or weight.

Travel Scrabble. We play 3-4 games on a sea day afternoon. My bride mops the Lido deck with me in 3 games - and 1 I lead for a turn or two before she savages me some 80+ point play.

 

She is mystified as to why I'm not more anxious to play...

LOVE Bananagrams! So portable and a lot of fun. It is basically scrabble but you don't score your words. Definitely pick it up. We played while on the Fantasy last week.

 

We also travel with a deck of cards and a game called Fluxx.
