Docking in Rostock

We are sailing on Celebrity Eclipse around the Baltics this summer. Our ship docks in Rostock, not Warnemunde, and we would like to try and get to Rostock station in order to visit Schwerin or Lubeck. How easy will it be to get to the station? Do you think Celebrity will operate a shuttle since Rostock appears to be a more commercial port? Many thanks for your help.

We were on the Regatta last summer which docked at Rostock. We literally walked from the ship through a parking lot to the train station. It was not difficult at all to get into Rostock via train. I am sure the German folks will agree. There are some tour guides--not ship ones--that can get you there too. check these boards for names. We were hoping to do this but our guide got the stomach flu at the last minute so we just enjoyed ourselves in Rostock. We took a tour around rostock which was very reasonable--about $15. I can't remember how long it was but it was adequate.

None in our group spoke German and we had no issues.

We did this trip in 2007 visitng Lubeck. Well worth the visit. Quite easy and cheap.

You can walk from the port to the metro station. From there there is a train that goes to the central station in Rostock. Check with http://www.bahn.com/i/view/GBR/en/index.shtml

for the times. The metro is not very frequent.

Coming back, we walked from the central station to the shuttle point in the centre of Rostock and took the Celebrity Shuttle back to the ship.

Hi, the train station for ships berthed in the Port of Rostock, Seehafen Nord, is about a 10-15 min walk from the dock gates.

Trains depart every hour from 7.06am and return every hour up to 9.34pm. The journey takes approx. 28 mins.

There is a two hourly service from Rostock main station to either Schwerin or Lübeck departing at 9.07am etc. The journey to Schwerin is direct and takes 1 hour while the journey to Lübeck requires one change of train and takes just under 2 hours.

Celebrity Cruises do usually operate a shuttle bus when their ships berth in the commercial port.

Happy cruising, :)

Anni

My parents (who do not live in Germany nor speak German) used the train from Warnemunde to Schwerin last year. It is very easy to do. I like both Schwerin and Lübeck, both beautiful cities.

Check out the possibility of a Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-Ticket. With this ticket, you can use the train unlimited for one day in the whole of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region from 09:00 onwards (on weeekends you can start earlier).

The basic fare is EUR 20 for 1, adding 3 EURO for every extra person, up to a maximum of 5 people (that is EUR 32 in total): so for only EUR 20 for 1 person, EUR 23 for 2 people, EUR 26 for 3 persons, etc. If you travel with 4 other people of your familie or roll-call, it can be as cheap as 6,40 per person for a whole day! You can buy the ticket in advance online. Additionally (so above the 5 persons), all children up to 15 travel with parents or grandparents for free.

My parents had a bargain going up and down to Schwerin for a total of 23 EUR (two return tickets would have been a lot more). You can also buy this special ticket at the ticket window or in the train, then it is 2 EUR more. It is a good deal to Lübeck too, since a "normal single" costs 23,60 each way.

The ticket is also valid outside M-V, to Lübeck, to Hamburg and even in Poland on the following stretches:

- Brandenburg: Grabow(Meckl)-Karstädt - Bad Wilsnack

- Hamburg: Reinbek - Hamburg-Bergedorf - Hamburg Hbf(KBS 100) including greater Hamburg public transport

- Schleswig-Holstein: Herrnburg - Lübeck St. Jürgen - Lübeck Hbf - Lübeck-Travemünde Strand, Schwanheide - Büchen- Hamburg - Bergedorf - Hamburg Hbf

- Polen: Grambow - Szczecin Gumience - Szczecin Glowny (including public transport in Szczecin), Ahlbeck Grenze. Swinoujscie Centrum (in trains of the UBB)
