Does formal apply throughout the ship?

Recommended Posts

What is the usual dress in Chops? I read on some thread that they liked to eat in Chops on formal night since they didn't need to dress formally. It would seem that Chops is even more formal that MDR so a suit more or less is expected.

All the specialty restaurants list the attire as "smart casual". They welcome formal attire on formal night (or any other night for that matter). But there is no requirement.

Going on IOTS in Sept. On formal nights, do you have to be formal everywhere on the ship, e.g bars, theatre, walking around, or is it just in the MDR?

Technically it is supposed to follow through to the theater, casino, dance clubs and other public areas. I have never seen it enforced.

I always do late seating for dinner, so I am still walking around in shorts and a t shirt while the early seating dinners are already all dressed up.

When I did late dining I felt strange walking around in my shorts while the early dining was in tuxes and gowns. We don't bring formal attire either anymore due to constraints in luggage weight when flying. Our waiter 2 weeks ago said if you didn't bring formal clothes do not worry and come anyway as long as it is presentable and not shorts. We usually go to a specialty restaurant on formal night as it is listed as smart casual but I go in smart casual+ for lobster night. I'm not missing lobster night! :p

Its comical to me that when I wear only a shirt, tie and slacks on formal night instead or a suit or tux - it ruins someones vacation.
Going commando is your own business. But bare feet in the dinning room is kinda gross, don't you think?

With only 1 cruise under my belt I have limited experience. I can say that on the first formal night I wore a suit, tie, dress shoes and the whole bit but I found that most others wore only jacket and slacks so that's what I wore for the second. As soon as dinner was over we both changed into our shorts and flip flops and didn't feel out of place at all. Mind you we went for a walk on the deck.

We also ate in Chops and Portofinos and wore dress casual as did everyone else.

I wore a Hawaiian shirt and slacks to dinner every night and was ever so comfortable. Hate to wear a suit and tie on vacation. I guess what is important is wear what you feel comfortable in. If you worry that everyone will be looking at you, then dress more formally, if you are comfortable with dressing less than formal, then do so. Your choice.

our last few cruises were NCL and we loved not having to bring fancy clothes. We're trying RCI this time around and we're each only bringing one nicer formally outfit.. wearing it to eat and take a picture, and changing into comfy clothes. and we'll wear it more than once... who cares.
