linda-destin Posted February 2, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 2, 2011 hi, I'd like to take my 10 year old son diving during our stop in Grand Caymen. He is only certified to 40 feet and is a novice diver. I thought the Stingray city dive looked interesting but sure it would be packed with people and is a little too shallow. Are there any other good 40 feet dive sites and captains anyone can recommend in Grand Cayman?? thanks in advance, Linda
Capt_BJ Posted February 2, 2011 #2 Share Posted February 2, 2011 well, you could find a boat trip, but most take boats to get to the wall and the top of the wall is around 60 feet with the popular diving depth at 100, so that's kinda out unless you are the only ones on the boat when they would do 2 shallow dives. StingRayCity area meets the shallow requirement. If this were me, I'd contact Sunset House and ensure they are OK with the junior certification (I'm sure they are) and shore dive there. Your cost will be a taxi to get there (you can walk, it is 1 mile from tender landing area) and rental gear. You can do a nice shore dive here and stay around 40 feet .... EDEN ROCK area is another option. I took dd on a Discovery Dive at Sunset back in May. A DD also has a shallow requirement and she had a great time . . I've been diving at Sunset House since the early 80's. http://sunsethouse.com/
JoeU Posted February 2, 2011 #3 Share Posted February 2, 2011 Linda, Try Divers Down, specifically the Wreck of the Cali (http://www.diversdown.net/_ndivshore.htm). This wreck is a shore dive in 30ft of water. My Dw and I tried to do this as a discover dive years ago, but the weather was rough that day, and we couldn't do it. They are very friendly and responsive if you e-mail or call them. Joe
Scythe Posted February 3, 2011 #4 Share Posted February 3, 2011 Great staff, price, & some great diving, right from shore. Didn't reserve, just showed up. One guide for just the 2 of us the day we went. http://www.edenrockdive.com/ Edit: Just FYI, I'd reserve if taking your son. It's been awhile since our last visit there, and it seems to be a much more visited dive center now.
w&k Posted February 10, 2011 #5 Share Posted February 10, 2011 We have done shore dives at Sunset House, and they were quite good. If you're looking for a boat dive, I would recommend going with Casey and Keith at Neptune's Divers. http://www.neptunesdivers.com/ Come on over to the Scuba and Snorkeling board - you'll find lots of information over there. Have a great time! Wendy
