From Vietnamese sources these tourists were travelling as backpackers. We pray for their souls and at the same time, need be assured as facilities for sea cruisers and shore excursioners belong to the top-notch. Also means the safest. Rare MVPinBoynton Posted February 17, 2011 #4 Share Posted February 17, 2011 Steveo, Thank you for letting us know about this terribly sad incident. We were in Halong Bay last year and fell in love with this beautiful area. I saw many of these type boats that I wouldn't feel comfortable touring on, much less spending the night on. 2Fltravelers Posted March 29, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 29, 2011 We were on a junk in Ha Long Bay that same night but did not hear about it until the next morning. We understand this is the first time this happened and that the Vietnamese authorities did not regularly inspect the junks. Apparently that has now changed as all junk trips on the Bay were cancelled for a few days while the junks were inspected. We believe it was human error but it was very sad nonetheless. It really frightened our office when they read about it the next morning as they did not realize how many junks are on the Bay at a time.
