Amsterdam port to airport

Best would be a transfer bus from your cruise line. Next best would be a taxicab; there is a flat rate to the airport (€50?), which is about 45 minutes from the cruise terminal. If you can get off your ship early, like 7:30 or 8, you should be able to make an 11:15am flight. Security at AMS is at the gate, so you don't have to negotiate a crowded security area as in most other airports (there may be a line at the gate, but at that point you are close to boarding).

What might be the best idea for going from the cruise port to the Amsterdam Airport? Is an 11:15 departure reasonable?

Taxi to Amsterdam CS/(Centraal Station) about 2km; then train to Schiphol airport. Trains leave VERY frequently, and it's just an elevator from platform to terminal building.

Take the train from Amsterdam Centraal to Schiphol (the airport). The cruise terminal is one kilometer east of the train station, so you could walk (which is what we did luggage and all), take a tram (#25 or 26, they stop right across the street from the cruise terminal) or take a cab (minimum fare for a short ride).

If you should elect a cab have them take you to the airport, you might as well.

But in my opinion (since you asked) the best idea is to take the train.

The distance from the cruise terminal to the train station is one kilometer, according to Google map or Earth. You are right about trains leaving very frequently.

To take the train, you have to buy your ticket either at a machine (coins only) or at the ticket office. If you are a 'senior' ask for the waiver of the one euro fee to buy tickets at the office. The person selling you the ticket(s) will tell you which platform and the next departure time. The platforms are one level higher and you can walk or take an elevator, as you mentioned. The same applies at Schiphol, the airport.

Just a reminder that you are travelling in rushhour on the train.

Trains might be rather busy and full and there is not much space for storage.

Also you have to put luggage into/from the train yourself.

Please stay with it (and watch your handluggage) at all times.

In case you fly to the USA, most airlines want you at checkin 3 hours prior departure. Try to do on-line checkin the day before, that saves time.

As mentioned security is done at the gate, so donot come too late there.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Ed

Thanks, to all who have answered. We might consider staying one night after arrival to avoid the stress of trying to make an 11:15 flight. I haven't looked yet for a possible hotel but I remember that Amsterdam hotel are quite expensive. Ed
