MrALO Posted March 1, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2011 We will be in Sydney, Canada at the beginning of June on an HAL cruise. We can't go to the Cabot Trail because the ship won't be in long enough. What else should we do? We have heard the AGBell Museum is worth seeing. Is there anything to do in the town? Is it nice enough to walk around in?

Langley Cruisers Posted March 1, 2011 #3 Share Posted March 1, 2011 Sydney, Nova Scotia is absolutely charming. We walked for hours and took a lot of pictures. It is a very historical spot. And we found the Tim Hortons and got the aforementioned coffee and donuts. Delightful. :)
Putterdude Posted March 1, 2011 #4 Share Posted March 1, 2011 I would be inclined to look into a Fortress of Louisbourg tour, the Fortress is amazing. http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/ns/louisbourg/index.aspx
Rare karatemom2 Posted March 1, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 1, 2011 I would be inclined to look into a Fortress of Louisbourg tour, the Fortress is amazing. http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/ns/louisbourg/index.aspx This is what we are planning on doing. My son in particular loves history so it seems like something the family will really enjoy. I know if you are recommending it I can feel confident in our choice! missjanet Posted March 2, 2011 #6 Share Posted March 2, 2011 We did this as a ship's tour on our RCCL cruise. It was a great way to spend the short amount of time we had in Sydney, especially since we were there on a beautiful day. We enjoyed walking around the outer limits of the fort & just enjoying the gorgeous scenery.
Jassy Posted April 14, 2011 #7 Share Posted April 14, 2011 I would be inclined to look into a Fortress of Louisbourg tour, the Fortress is amazing. http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/ns/louisbourg/index.aspx We also will be in Sydney, but it will be in May. I have read that Fortress Louisbourg is not really functioning at that time (no people in period costume, e.g.) and so I am wondering if it is worth us visiting? If not, what other attractions, sights, tours can we do to get a nice feel for the area? Our ship arrives at 1:00 and departs at 7:00.
maryann ns Posted April 15, 2011 #8 Share Posted April 15, 2011 I would take a scenic drive which includes Baddeck and the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. Baddeck is a lovely little town with lots of places for tourists. The drive back through Iona is very pretty. http://goo.gl/maps/Pq2Z
no fuss travel Posted April 17, 2011 #9 Share Posted April 17, 2011 There is a coal mine tour that you can go on that takes you under the ocean. If you are tall you will have to stoop a bit, but well worth going on. The Bell museum is worth a visit, lots of hands on exhibits.
maryann ns Posted April 17, 2011 #10 Share Posted April 17, 2011 Here is the information for the Miner's Museum. The tour is excellent, but again, it does not open until June 1. http://www.minersmuseum.com/visitor_information.htm
