What to do in New Orleans?

We are going on a cruise in May and leaving from New Orleans. Our return flight home is not until 8pm. Any ideas on what to do in New Orleans for the day and what we would do with our luggage? Any suggestions would be most helpful

There are a ton of things to do in New Orleans, depending on what you enjoy. You will disembark in the business area. You can take a cab to the FQ (or walk if you would like it's about 2 miles I'd say). There is the world famous Cafe Dumonde for beignets (donut like treats). The French Quarter where you could walk around and just look at the sights that you'll likely not see in too many other places in the country. Royal Street is the arts district and has lots of galleries and shops in which to browse or buy. We have a wonderful aquarium, insectarium and zoo (Uptown - you could take the street car (trolley)). Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral are both interesting to see. As well as Preservation Hall and several other museums. Harrah's casino in the Downtown area (near the French Quarter) if you like gamble. Some of the best restaurants in the world. You could go on a tour of the cemeteries. Most of our cemeteries are built above ground due to the volume of water in ground. They are mostly unique to this area and very interesting. Some of them are hundreds of years old. The World War II Museum is phenomenal. I hope this helps and I'm sure I can think of much more if you aren't interested in these things. ;) Not sure what you would do with your luggage though? I have heard of paying on the ship to send your luggage directly to the airline. Not sure if that is available on the Triumph.

We had a similar situation in December when we went out of New Orleans on the Triumph. Our flight didn't leave until 5:00 p.m. We were picked up at our hotel to go to the ship and started talking to the driver and asked him what it would cost us to do a planation tour when we got off the ship. He agreed to pick us up, take us to two plantations, wait for us for how ever long it took us to do tours and then drive up around New Orleans a bit and drop us at the airport - $140. That was pretty good. There is a stop just when you get out of the terminal that will take your luggage to the airport for you and hold it - I think it was something like $25 for 2 pieces. Then to get to French Quarter to do a plantation tour was a cost of a cab, and then $70 each for the tour, to be dropped back at French Quarter and then about $30 to get to airport. I don't think we did bad for two plantations, sight seeing and airport drop off. One thing, eat before you get to airport - not a large selection at airport and it's expensive (as is any airport food).

We just got back from sailing on the Triumph from NOLA. We stayed at Harrah's the night before the cruise. Took taxi to the ship port the next day. Then after the cruise we took taxi back to Harrah's and left our luggage with the bellhop while we walked around, came back and got it in time for our trip home to Illinois on Amtrak train. It worked out well, the only cost was some tips to bellhop, etc. We told them we had stayed there the night before cruise, they didn't seem to mind us leaving luggage there. I am not sure how it would work if you hadn't stayed there at least one night prior to cruise. Harrahs' is very close to French Quarter, Bourbon street and we walked around the night before the cruise also.

Been there a time or two and cruised out on the Fantasy. Love eating at Acme Oyster House, 724 Iberville Street in the French Quarters -best Gumbo anywhere. Rain or shine there is always a line.
