Thinking of renting a car and driving down to Tulum. Anybody rented a car in Playa Del Carmen? I was thinking this may give us more time to see the ruins and beach. Thanks.

Was there a couple of years ago and Tulum was a distance from Calica/Playa. Think you'd be better off getting a driver or booking an excursion.

No_Reservations - I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I was looking at a private tour, but I read reviews on here that gave me second thoughts about the company and implied basically all they do is rent a car and drive you around. It occurred to me that I could do that myself for half the price. All I've found so far is that Avis and Hertz and Ace all have rental car offices in Playa del Carmen, but they're not necessarily near the ferry pier.

 

I'm a bit nervous about the actual car rental process. I've heard about rip-offs by car rental companies in Mexico. So, I'm trying to find recommendations on companies...no luck so far though.

Yeah, I was able to locate the offices but in the same boat as you. I know people have rented cars before and driven down to Tulum. It can't be impossible.
