car rental from Nice airport

My husband and I will be arriving at Nice airport on May 29th. We will be staying in the Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes. We thought we would rent a car at the airport tour around for the day and drop it at Ville Franche the following day before we board the Azamara Journey. The cruise leaves right after the Grand Prix so we thought that taxi's would be hard to get. The cost of the car seemed like a bargain compared to transportation to the hotel and then to the port.We will be arriving on Sunday so is it true most shops are closed? We plan on vising Eze Mougins and St Paul de Vence. Any other suggestions?
