Solstice European Excursions....Help!

Recommended Posts

We will be on the Solstice to Europe this October. Has anyone been on this cruise before and do you know which excursions are worth the money? Is it possible to see much on our own in any of the ports (Nice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Dubrovnik, Venice, Montenegro)? There seem to be so many excursions and some are very expensive.

We will be in Barcelona a few days early and doing our sightseeing there at that time.

Appreciate any advice from all you seasoned travelers!

If you have not already checkout out the Roll Call board on Cruise Critic for your cruise, you should do so. Many times people on Roll Call boards organize excursions with private tour companies and solicit people on the Roll Call board to sign up with them. Generally with a private tour you not only obtain a better (sometimes much better) price than with a cruise line excursion, but often it is a smaller group so the tour guide can get you to more places as well as personalize the tour to people's interests.

I have not been to most of your ports, but for at least Rome your ship will dock far, far away - so at a minimum you will need to arrange for transportation into Rome (about 1 & 1/4 hours drive away from the port).

Nice, you will dock in Villefranche, It's very easy to take the train into Monte Carlo, about 5 euros return.

Florence, you will need to do an excursion as Florence is a long way inland. We have done the Florence on your own.

Rome is more or less the same as Florence, although the DIY on the train is done by a lot of people.

Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum are very easy to do on your own .

Dubrovnik, you dock in the town and walking around the town is good.

Venice, again you are docked in the city.

Never been to Montenegro.
