karpowij Posted March 9, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 9, 2005 I was recently in LaRomana and it was probably my least favor port in 6 cruises. The boat docks next to the prison. To get to town, you must cut through a baseball field to a dirt road then to the paved road which leads into town. It is about a mile into town. As you are walking, you will be approached by all sorts of vendors or people offering to "escort" you to a shop where they receive a fee for bringing you. There was a man in uniform with a sawed off shot gun trying to chase some of the locals away. The town is very poor and does not have reliable electricity so it may be dark at 7pm. There was not much in town. I would suggest you either stay on the ship, take an expensive ship's excursion (avoid the Gator Boat Ride which was a waste of time and money) or hire a taxi to shop at Altos De Chavon which is a "recreation" of a Dominican colonial village. karpowij Posted March 11, 2005 #4 Share Posted March 11, 2005 We did not go to Catalina Island. we were on the Holland America Westerdam. I think Catalina Island is a private island for another line but I've read good reviews on this site.
