Arlendius Posted April 26, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 26, 2011 I stayed for a week at the Triton Hotel 2 years ago. That hotel is just a stone throw away from the Golden Sands beach (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=35.511531,23.992252&spn=0.009676,0.027981&t=h&z=16). The beach is really nice and scenic, but quite crowded during the summer. It is located a 10 minute ride by Taxi from the old town in Chania, or you can walk from the harbor in the old town in 25-30 minutes (we did this walk every day for a week, and it is really nice). So it is quite easy to explore the old town of Chania (it is quite small, so a couple of hours should do it), and combine it with several hours at the Golden Sands beach. There are 2-3 "beach tavernas" with basic junk food on the beach it self, but there are also 4-5 "real" tavernas with much better (Greek) food in the area (just a few minutes walk from the beach). I would say that Golden Sands is the closest nice beach to Chania, there is a beachfront all the way from it and to the city, but it is just a narrow strip of sand with sun beds way to close together. If the whole idea is to go to a beach for a day, I would go to Georgioupoli. That is a beautiful fishing village that now has a lot of hotels. It has a beach that is over 10 km (6.5 miles) long, and the part close to Georgioupoli is really really nice (just remember to walk across the little river before you get a sunbed).
