While you won't get a connection in Europe due to compatibility, you should be able to use it on the ship if you don't mind coming home to a four figure phone bill. There are many stories here in this site by cruisers who didn't realize the huge per minute charges, even for just checking email. The worst was a man who used his Blackberry for email, and came home to a $2000 phone bill. When I first used my iPhone in Europe on a cruise, I had no idea what was happening, and my bill was nearly $700. Now, I turn off data roaming or put the phone on airplane mode so I don't get the huge bills.
