Balcony Smoking

I have been smoke free for over 2 years. I smoked for 31 years. I cruised on the Glory a month ago. We had a Balcony cabin and our neighbors on both sides used their balconies to smoke. SO WHAT? It was outside and the boat was moving at 20 knots.

BTW, if you're looking for the PERFECT cruise you'll be disappointed.

If you make it the perfect cruise you'll never be disappointed. :)

I couldn't agree more. I've always had a great cruise (or any other vacation for that matter) and I think it's mostly because I only worry about my doings, not about what anyone else is doing!

As I've said before, I don't smoke, DH has COPD, if he's uncomfortable we move, as for the balcony issue, he's never complained. Even when I mentioned this thread to him, his comment was at 22 knots an hour how long can the smoke hang around!

Now if people were wearing purple socks and yellow polka dots, I may have to reconsider my no complaints rule! :)

I certainly wouldn't condone doing something like that, but I find it mildly hypocritical of smokers flaming people for even suggesting making their balcony so unpleasant that they couldn't enjoy it.

I think the point has been made though, do unto others...if you wouldn't like it, don't subject someone else to it.

Thanks for the quick responses. That makes sense that it is for the common areas only. It would be a bit difficult to enforce for private balconies (not just for supervision reasons, but practicality and fairness if one side sells out quicker than the other). Maybe things will go well and I'll get neighbors who are non-smokers. Either way, I'm looking forward to a great vacation :-)

I wish more people had your attitude! Have a wonderful cruise! :)

The only time the smoke bothers me (also a former 20 year smoker here) is when it is humid and the smoke from a neighbor hangs on my clothes or in my hair.

To be honest, our next cruise is an inside room because I know it will be hot and humid outside. It just wasn't worth it to me to chance having smokey mcsmokersons next door. Problem solved.

Good luck in trying to quit, I hope you can. The fact that you want to quit but are not able to must suck for you though. That would be a hard battle to deal with. Im trying to get my Mom to quit but she really doesnt want to but needs to for her health. I wish she was like you and actually wanted to. Its one of those things that is easy for some people to quit and others its so hard and they can have alot of problems when they do try to quit. It seems to be kinda like some people can go on a diet suceed with no problems and others its a battle all there life...So good job trying. Everyone has some habit they need to break....

Actually nicotine is more addictive then heroin and it is really really hard to quit whether you want to or not. Just some have more success faster than some other people.

The E-Cigarette is working really well for me but I am still getting my nicotine. Getting ready to step down to the next lower level though.

You do not have the right to ask them not to smoke on their balcony. As far as the "skunk water" - How old are you? Grow up. I do not care for smoke but I do not let it bother me.

Actually, yes, you do have the right to say what you want to whom you want. It's called Freedom of Speech. They have the right to ignore your request and enjoy their balcony any way they choose free of repercussions.

Yes, you do have the right to ask them to quit smoking in a designated smoking area, but at the same time, they have the right to ignore you since they are within the designated smoking areas set by CCL. Whether you call it a right or privilege provided by CCL, it is irrelavent. CCL establishes the rules for smoking. So light 'em if you got 'em!:)

I don't smoke but my husband does.

He is considerate and does NOT smoke in the cabin. However he does smoke on the balcony.

I would much rather sit with him (he sits towards the aft LOL) and enjoy his company than watch him run up to a designated smoking area for his smoke.

I have watched people go by the smoking area where he is sitting and make snarky comments because they have to "walk thru the smoke", roll their eyes, etc. at him but since there are so few areas, my suggestion to the non-smokers would be to stay out of those areas.

I believe that's what I said, but thanks for saying it again.

Im not a smoker and I hate the smell of smoke, but if I was a smoker after reading all these comments I think it would make me want to smoke more....Everyone has some habit they need to break thats not healthy...........I really dont think anyone should judge people you know nothing about.....

Not going to weigh in on the smoking, as smoke doesn't bother me, even though I'm a non-smoker, but there is no way on G*d's green earth that "skunk" is allowed when other non-lethal weapons (and yes, it IS a weapon) are not allowed, i.e. mace and pepper-spray.

I think all (or most) non-smokers dislike the smell of cigarette smoke, I agree though "preachy" non-smokers are annoying. I'm a non-smoker and I don't like the smell any more than anyone else, but it's their vacation, they are on THIER balcony that they paid for and they have a right. If the wind is blowing towards my balcony then I guess that's too bad for me. It's not the smoker's fault.

As for Obese people being allowed to eat and eat.....last time I checked I haven't had to be "allowed" to do anything since I was about 17 years old....Also, and this is a pet peeve of mine watching The Biggest Loser....Death is NOT imminent for all overweight people! I am very healthy and have no medical issues. To date I haven't cost my medical system a dime more than anyone else I know - and in fact rely on it far less than the guy I saw the other day picking up THIRTEEN perscriptsions....he wasn't obese but he clearly has way more medical issues than I do. I try live an active lifestyle (I don't drive a scooter or do nothing but sit in my chair all day at home) day to day and I try to make good food choices.....and YES I am overweight! I've said it before and I'll say it again - it is NONE of your business what I eat on MY vacation! Everyone indulges in something on vacation and if food is my choice then it's MY choice!

I agree, well said! It's unfair to compare these two issues. It's no ones business what one puts in their mouth and eats! That person isnt harming anyone. On the otherhand a smoker who blows smoke in the air is harming non smokers and facts are that second hand smoke is harmful. But smokers have the same rights as non smokers and although its hard to sometimes get out of a smokers way i'll find a area that is smoke free.

Abso-friggin-lootly! As long as you aren't putting any one else in harms way, or publicly exposing your naughty bits, I say everyone should spend "THEIR" vacation however "THEY" want to.

I am sick of the smoking issue - also people bitching about what men or women are wearing - or making fun of anyone eating 13 desserts! - You know I actually had a woman "tisk" "tisk" me for grabbing two Melting Cakes off the buffett.

I would have liked to see her "tisk tisk" my 6'8" 185 lb son for taking 2 on our last cruise...He then ate over half of the one I took and I'm the one that's overweight .

My wife and I don't smoke, don't like smoke, and truly hope that the person in the balcony next to ours does not smoke. That being said, if I go out there and my neighbor is smoking, I will just relax and enjoy the fact that we are both on vacation, and can enjoy ourselves and make ourselves at home.

Its all in the attitude.

I'm not going to get into a long debate about this - but it really bugs me when other people worry about me and what I'm eating. Don't they think I'm self conscious enough without wondering what others are thinking and judging? I can't believe you had someone actually tisk tisk you....honestly.

I've seen MANY perfectly skinny folks with 3 or more plates of food in front of them, while I make my way to my table carrying ONE plate and wondering who might be judging me for eating at the buffet!

NO one should have to feel anything other than pure joy and happiness that they are on a cruise, getting a break from real life (and the stresses that come with it) and are enjoying themselves how ever they choose - in the casino, at the bar, by the pool, doing karaoke, EATING or puffing away on their smoke.....it's vacation people - worry about your own good time....

I was recently on RC's Independance of the Seas, and their casino was non-smoking. A first for me ever!! .

I would guess you'll see that on Carnival Spirit to fall in line with Australian smoking laws.

I remember the glorious day smoking was banned in Australian casinos. I could go without returning with a burning sore throat, itchy eyes, and clothes that smelt like I'd just returned from fighting a tire fire.
