Help! Why rent when taxi is almost the same price?

I want to go to Marigot in the morning for breakfast and then to Orient and hang out and then back to Phillipsburg to shop and catch the boat. People are suggesting cars. When I look at the taxi prices it looks like each leg is approximately $6-8 for each leg (we are a group of 3) so why would I deal with a car rental? Also, this is a group rate correct, not per person? It just seems a lot easier, am I missing something? Thanks for any help.

Taxi rates are listed in the St. Maarten Taxi Association Webpage.

For a group of 3, each leg will be about $6-8/PERSON. So the day's taxi costs for the group will be $54-$72 (plus TIP for each leg). If the tip is $5-$10 for each leg, your costs would be $69-$102 (or $23-$34 per person).

You could rent a car, but you won't have the "tour guide" narrative on the island provided by the taxi driver.

Add in another $21 for 3 chairs/umbrella/drinks at Orient.

Wiggin, it's really just a matter of personal preference. Some people really like cruising around in a jeep with the top down, saving some cash in the process, others prefer to sit back and let someone else deal with the traffic and finding one's way around. We opted for a taxi the last time in SXM, will probably do a jeep one of these times.

These moments are shared, by few
And those harbor lights, lord they’re coming into view
We’ll bid our farewells much too soon
So drink it up, this one’s for you -
Honey, it’s been a lovely cruise."
