Where to stay in Portugal after cruise

We are doing a T/A from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona and after the cruise we will be touring Spain and Portugal with some friends. We are looking for some recommendations for a smallish place in Portugal to spend maybe 5 or 6 nights - somewhere quiet, but not too quiet, more culturally Portugese, maybe even a recommendation for an apartment. We are British, but have lived in Canada for the last 30 years and don't know anything about today's Portugal. Any info or help would be appreciated.

we stayed near Faro with British relatives who retired there (a common occurrence). I suggest you post your question on the Portugal forum of tripadvisor; the locals (destination experts) who post regularly will provide recommendations.
