Aussiemate Posted April 30, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2011 We booked direct the 5 hour 26Glacier Tour on the Klondike Express from Whittier. Be aware that there is a Fuel Surcharge about $20 plus port fee in addition to the advertised fare. Is a Fuel Surcharge on shore tours now common place? Balinca Posted April 30, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 30, 2011 We also have to pay more for our Tour with Harv and Marv, read this message ; You may notice that $8.00 has been added on. We have since needed to add a gas surcharge onto our tours of $4.00 per person. Gas has skyrocketed in Juneau and hopefully this will offset the climbing prices. I apologize for this, but right now gas is $4.47 in Juneau and is expected to rise another 20% this summer - we are preparing ourselves so we can survive it. Glaciers Posted April 30, 2011 #3 Share Posted April 30, 2011 There are many vendors who may begin including the surcharge. One of the local TV stations did and article on it last week. http://articles.ktuu.com/2011-04-26/bottom-line_29477123
vbmom87 Posted April 30, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 30, 2011 Our tour in Whittier with Eco Adventures has a notation in the confirmation that if the price of gas goes over $3.60 there will be fuel supplement added. I have no problem with this. These vendors operate, for the most part, for only 3-4 months out of the year. IF they have to take a hit on fuel, their profits can really slide. I think it is fair. I know my independent vendor in Sitka does not charge a fuel supplement and I told him he should, however, he feels it will hurt his business. Chenega Posted April 30, 2011 #5 Share Posted April 30, 2011 This is going to have a major impact on the tourist business up here this summer. Companies are already exploring ways to conserve costs including running boats at slower speeds, parking fees, and fuel surcharges. It has been done before but it is a shame it has to happen again when the tourist season is just a few weeks away.

The advertised price should be what is charged and, if necessary, include such surcharges. I guess if airlines can get away with it, other aspects of the tourist business can do so as well. If the vendors are charging $4.00pp give or take as a surcharge, (which Is I feel justified) I do not think they need to cut back on anything. That's what the surcharge is for. So they don't have to. I just hope they don't use the surcharge just to make extra money off the tourists. But of what I read about the people in Alaska (Good things), I would think if it happens, it would be minimal.
