sjwoody1167 Posted May 5, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 5, 2011 In Juneau I am going on shore excursions which end at about 3pm. The ship doesn't leave until 8pm. Does anyone have suggestions for what to do for those hours? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think you can still tour the Capitol, State Museum, or City Museum until 5 or 6pm. You'd also have just enough time to head directly to the Alaskan Brewing Company for some samples (think they close at 5pm). There's also a nice walking tour in Frommer's guidebook, past an orthodox church, governor's mansion, courthouse, etc. You can also still go up Mt. Robert's tram well into the evening. Plenty of other evening excursions as well, such as whale watching, if you still have $$ in your budget. I enjoyed a few hours in town simply by eating dinner at the Hangar and drinks at the Alaskan Bar. The Red Dog Saloon looked pretty busy, so it could be fun as well (I didn't go in). The public library also had internet access, if you just want to check in on things at home.
Budget Queen Posted May 6, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 6, 2011 There is a dock visitor center, that should have walking tour maps. There is a lot to see, if of interest. Head to your library and take out Fodor's Alaska and Frommer's Alaska, these both also have walking tour information, to also get details on. The Red Dog is enjoyed by many, but I like the Alaskan Hotel for it's "realness". Consider a stop in, for a look around. Then there is always shopping. sjwoody1167 Posted May 6, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted May 6, 2011 I'm sorry, I should have said I am going whale watching, the the Mendenhall glacier and to a salmon bake for my excursion. Thank you for the replies so far, it looks like I can just hang around town if nothing else.
Artrina Posted May 7, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 7, 2011 We do a similar excursion. After that we plan to do the Mt Roberts Tramway - if the weather is nice; go to a liquor store and buy a bottle of wine from an Alaskan winery and I'm a sourdough bread baker so we have to visit the House of Wickersham - it has a connection to Yukon Jack. I'll be watching this thread to see what others can recommend.
