jtl513 Posted May 6, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 6, 2011 I am looking for the information if HAL is running a free buses between Piazzale Roma and the ships in Venice. Thanks, TD Last year it was hit-or-miss whether they had shuttles at all, and when they were available they were $5/p/direction charged to your on-board account. There were none when we arrived around 3:00p on embarkation day. (During the night we moved to Riva Sette Martiri, and there was no need for shuttles on sailing day.) I suggest the People Mover for 1 Euro pp. See this thread for maps, a photo, and a link to a table showing where you will be docked. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1409216
oceanswimmer Posted May 7, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 7, 2011 We just back from a cruise on HAL where we stopped in Venice. I don't recall seeing any shuttles from the cruise ship at all. We used the People Mover (which is an elevated train that goes from the dock area to P.Roma) which was 1 Euro one way. It was very easy to use and came promptly every 5 minutes (and was very clean). You buy the tickets at the station from a machine but one caution -- the machine would not take 20 Euro bills (this was a problem for us :-( You want to have smaller bills than that. rebeccalouiseagain Posted May 7, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 7, 2011 Yes one of the reasons for the people mover was to help with congestion at the entrance to the port. Taxis and buses were having to make a left turn there and it was slowing down traffic and causing problems.
catl331 Posted May 7, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 7, 2011 Yes one of the reasons for the people mover was to help with congestion at the entrance to the port. But the main reason was to provide better access to parking on Tronchetto Island.
paganwoman Posted May 7, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 7, 2011 We just left the Nieuw Amsterdam last Saturday in Venice and stayed until Monday before we flew home. There was a lot of confusion at the port terminal building when we disembarked and no one seemed to know what was going on. There was a bus from HAL that took you to the entrance of the port. It seemed silly because we could see the entrance it was that close. The purpose was to get you to the people mover I quess. The people mover does not let you off in the middle of P Roma. You still have a walk to get to the vaporattos and other transport in Venice. We opted to take a shuttle bus at the entrance of the Port (which we walked the 10 min to instead of taking the HAL shuttle) This bus delivered you right to the middle of P Roma. Since our Hotel was within walking distance of here it worked really well for us. It was just confusing and we had to wait about 20 min for the bus since no one seemed to know when it came. It was a port bus I think. Nothing to do with HAL. HAL shuttle just got you to the Port entrance.
