Panama Canal Cruise Question

My wife and I are doing the west to east Panama Canal cruise on the Infinity in April 2012. Just noticed that it seems like a lot of time from when the ship leaves the canal at 6pm till it reaches Colon the next morning at 6am. Since it is just a very short distance to Colon just wondering what goes on? Could someone who has done this cruise please give us a heads up. Thanks in advance.

I just got off the Century which went through the Canal westbound. We did stop at Colon the day before the Canal. The Infinity will sail in the area until it is time to dock in Colon the next morning. The ship is charged quite a bit on money to be tied up at the dock. Also, it must close the casino and it's shops while in port. This is why you won't go directly to Colon after going through the Canal.

You will have a fantastic time on this cruise - we went through the Panama Canal on the Infinity and just loved it. She is a beautiful ship, and sailing through the Panama Canal was amazing! We stayed on the ship through the locks going in and then sailed for a time in the actual 'lake'. We then hopped off to do an excursion where we walked through the jungle, and went on small boats to see wildlife. We were able to watch the Infinity go through the locks before reboarding in Colon, where the ship only stopped briefly to pick up guests who went on tours, and was then on its way again. They have obviously changed this to allow for time for sight seeing in Colon. When you are going through the locks, make sure you go around and get views from all sides of the ship. have a great trip!

We did the exact cruise last November and as the previous poster has said you will love the cruise and the Infinity. Of the 8 cruises we have taken this was by far one of the best.

If you want a preview of what you have to look forward too then check out my review on the following link as its full of details and lots of pictures of the ports and the ship.... any questions you have feel free to ask!
