ready2travel54 Posted May 17, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2011 know you can't predict the weather, but how often does fog affect the weather in Skagway. We are thinking of taking the White Pass railroad. We are trying to decide if we take a 7:30 train if fog might play a part in that decision. Or take a bus at 8:30 bus and return on the train. Toyz711 Posted May 17, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2011 we had fog on our round-trip train, the fog was heavy in town, lifted as we went up the mountain. on the way down, it was clear. everyone takes a photo of the old bridge, ours is cool because it's a ghost bridge it was a early morning trip, but we had rain in every port and heavy fog every night. Budget Queen Posted May 17, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 17, 2011 "Fog" can and does happen ANYTIME. Make your plans based on it fitting your touring priorities the best, and then hope for the best. :) With your question essentially asking if an hour difference is going to be any better?? This is insignificant.
wbdlangston Posted May 17, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 17, 2011 We did the round trip bus trip in Skagway to the Yukon in June 2009. We left Skagway early in the morning. It was very foggy most of the way on the ride to the Yukon. We saw very little through the fog. Our return trip was beautiful!! The sun was shining and the skies were blue. I took tons of pictures and they came out great.
Giantfan13 Posted May 17, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2011 We didn't do the RR but we rented a car in Skagway. It was very foggy that AM,and we couldn't decide to take the car or just stay in town. We went to the sort of Ranger station in town and they were able to look at some of their cameras positioned along the highways. The ones up on the mountain were very fog surrounded, but further out, the fog had already lifted to show a glorious day coming. We spoke with them at length, and they basically said you just never know if the fog will lift at any place or stay that way most of the day. Giantfan13 Posted May 17, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 17, 2011 here are a few visuals to show what I mean about the fog We drove paralleling the RR, which you can see the track on the right side going up into the fog. http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/new%20alaska/alaskamain381.jpg In Skagway, you can see the town is basically clear but anything upwards in in the fog http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/alaskamain450.jpg But once you cleared the pass, things really cleared up http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/new%20alaska/alaskamain440.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/new%20alaska/alaskamain446-1.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/new%20alaska/alaskamain413.jpg Cheers Len
