La Sepzia to Cinque Terre

We took the train from La Spezia to the Cinque Terra. There are special Cinque Terra passes you can purchase at the train station to get on and off the train or if you want to hike the trails. There are also ferries that run up and down the five towns depending on the season and weather.

How does one get to Cinque Terre from the ship that docks in La Spezia? I have read about trains and boats for transporation.

Before you plan a day in Cinque Terre, I'd suggest that you confirm that your day in port doesn't fall on a weekend or an Italian holiday.

On those days, the crowds in the five villages can grow to dangerous levels; and there is zero supervision or crowd control.

You dock in town (unless there has been a change) walk up the hill to the train station(maybe 7/8 blocks) buy the ticket and go. English is spoken at the station and signs are also in English. You can ride the train to any of the towns but we would suggest starting at the top..Monterossa, get off look around..get on the incoming train, skip Corniglia.(many steps to the top village, a really tough climb) Get off a Verannza (sp), look around, eat, have a wine..Get back on another incoming, get off at Manorola..Walk to Riomaggio (about 20 minutes) get back on another incoming and go back to La Spezia.. If you plan to do the walk take a padlock to place on the wall or fence..It supposedly locks your love in and from the many locks it is a cool thing to do;). It is an awesome experience and a DYI ..don't need a tour at all. Depending on the time of year, however, fold up plastic ponchos might be a good thing to have in your pockets or small day pack. Have a great time!!!:):):)

We took the ferry from La Spezia and it was magical. You get to see the other towns en route to the one you want to get off at. however you need to check the ferry times very carefully. We went at the end of October and it was not possible to do the return journey by ferry to get back to the ship in time. We did the return journey on the train which was very quick and easy and then we had a 20 min walk through the town back to the ship.

I really recommend going by ferry for the spectacular views of each town.

Like others we walked to the train station in La Spezia and took the train.

We went to Vernazza and walked to Corniglia. Unfortunately for us the trail was closed between Corniglia and Manarola so we found a bar and had a bottle of wine and a long lunch.

Walked down the stairs to the train station and went back to La Spezia and then walked back to the pier.

We will return here another time to see the other villages.

Agree with sweep! I have done it both ways , and there is no comparison. Seeing the towns perched on the hills, from the boat, is indeed magical. This website gives you info: http://www.navigazionegolfodeipoeti.it/

I think we may do what you suggested. I found the current ferry schedule at http://s4.computernopanic.com/USER_CONTENT/49/pdf/tratte_pdf_eng_7.pdf

Maybe we will take the ferry from La Spezia, then the train back, stopping in some of the villages, perhaps walking part of the way.

We had Cinque Terre all planned out since our ship was tendering in La Spezia last September. However, the day before we were scheduled to arrive in La Spezia, the Captain came on the PA and announced that there was going to be a one-day train strike when we were in port. So we tendered off the ship and walked over to the ferry ticket booth and bought an all day pass for 25 euros (23 euros on weekdays). We took the 9:15 am ferry and rode it to Portovenere, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso and then back to Vernazza where we got off. From there, we walked to Corniglia. It was hot, steep and the trails were quite narrow in areas with no guardrails and people were going in both directions---rather dangerous. The hike took close to two hours so we abandoned plans for any further hiking since we weren't going to be in port long enough. From Corniglia, we took trains and ferries to the next towns (yes, all of a sudden the trains were working). We got off and walked around a few of the towns. Then, we ended up in Portovenere and walked around and up to the church and cemetery which overlooked the ocean with great views. We boarded the ferry in Portovenere and arrived back in La Spezia after a full day! The views from the ferry and the hike were tremendous. You'll have a great time no matter how you plan to travel in this region!!!

We took the ferry one way and the then hiked between Montorosso and Vernazza with a nice lunch and then the train back to with some brief stops in the other villages. Loved it and it was a great way for us.

We also took the Ferry. It is only from the water that you can see the full beauty of the colorful villages hanging from the cliffs! You walk a short distance from the tender dock to the booth to buy your tickets, it is a Hop-on/Hop-off style ferry ...just keep track of the time.
