Alaska Railroad experiences--picnic?

We are taking the train from Fairbanks to Denali before our cruise. The info says to treat it like flying, so there an our before departure and expect to go through security.

It doesn't say if we are allowed to bring our own food and drink on board. That might be cheaper and better for our diets--is it allowed?

My father and I rode the Denali Star on May 18th (first day of the season) Anchorage to Denali and continued Denali to Fairbanks on the 20th. At both stations they ask that you check in early and do check id's. Neither day though did they check our bags.

Many people brought their own food, although we did buy lunch the first day and dinner the second. The food was fresh, healthy and not too expensive. We split a salad and sandwich, each got a drink each time and I think it was 17-18 bucks.
