Will placing the phone in airplane mode allow access to any text messages or missed calls ?

 

When you take your phone out of airplane mode your texts will come and your messages will be in your mailbox as long as you have a voice mailbox set up.

Ihave a question to add to this for those that have used it. We have iPhones with At&t.

 

When you board the ship are the ship towers or whatever on, or are you still using you service provider until sailaway? My daughter is going to want to text as long as possible. Lol. Also St Thomas is a USVI so when we get there, do we have to wait to get off ship to use AT&T, or when returning do we need to turn it off before coming back aboard ? Or will we be good till sail away again??

As long as the phone says ATT in the upper left, you will be on the land tower. The ship's tower is turned on after the land signal is out of range. They CAN turn it on whenever they want I suppose so be sure and check what the phone says. Once it says anything AT SEA - make sure you go into airplane mode.

 

Some departures will have the land tower available for hours. The problem with this is that many people have a little drink on the pool deck, go to dinner and forget they left their phone on. They set it down in the room....and the roaming charges start.

 

When in St. Thomas, you can use your phone all you want. Just be sure when you take it out of airplane mode that it says ATT. There is no reason you can't turn airplane mode off briefly just to check. As soon as a signal is found, you'll see what it says. Immediately switch it back to airplane mode if ATT isn't the signal you find. Same for St. Croix and Puerto Rico. Your local USA ATT plan applies in these places.

If you turn off the data roaming on your Droid, you will still be able to use your phone for calls & texts. Turning off data roaming will prevent the phone from accessing the web while data roaming is off, thus preventing those large data roaming bills. If you are in US Virgin Islands or PR your data & texts are incl in your domestic pkg, just make sure you wait til you are actually on land, not on the ship. Keep in mind, anyone with an HTC Imagio (windows based phone) the background data will turn itself back on, even if you turn it off.

That's actually seriously messed up My friend was telling me something tody about getting is set back to factory default, and that doing so would help extend the battery life of the phone, and stop the apps from opening (mostly because you'd have to downlaod and install all of them again). He also mentioned something about how we do not know anywhere near the amount of apps and processes running in these phones using data nearly all the time. In the wrong situation like the HTC Imagio described above in a roaming state, would be disasterous financially.

My husband's Droid had the data roaming turned off and we were charged the few times he used it for music at the gym. We called Verizon. The first rep refused to do anything. We called and got a different rep and were credit for those charges. Be careful with any smartphone on the ship.
