Giantfan13 Posted June 9, 2011 #3 Share Posted June 9, 2011 Most of the cruisers spend one day, usually a short day, in Stockholm. Depending on where your ship is docking, (any of 3 different places), can set the tone for your visit. Most people, try to get to the Vasa Museum as soon as they can. It should be your first stop on your visit. This place is just fantastic. They do limit the amount of people that enter at one time, so the earlier you get there, insures you can get in right away. Plan on spending at least 1 hour here, possible 2. It is a very enjoyable visit. Most cruisers, try to head to Gamla Stan after visiting Vasa. It is really too far to walk, and when time is short, there are quicker ways of getting there. You can do the HoHo bus, or boat, or use public transportation. At Gamla Stan, you can visit and tour, the Royal Palace, watch the changing of the guards ceremony, and just wander and explore Gamla Stan. We just loved this section of Stockholm, with narrow cobblestone streets. Some bustling with many, many tourists and others jsut no one there. It's the fun of exploring. Sit down at some little cafe for lunch, or browse the many wonderful shops. Others try to head to the 'ice bar', but that is up to you. Here are a few of my pics from this marvelous city At the Vasa Museum, you can view the Vasa ship, and take a guided tour of the entire place http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1197.jpg Over at Gamla Stan, here is the Royal Palace http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster1241.jpg At the Changing of the guard ceremony, there is a very colorful display as well as a full marching band http://s834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/?action=view¤t=europemaster1366.mp4 Walking a block or two, you enter Gamla Stan, just a wonderful area to stay with the crowds or go off and explore on your own http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1271.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1270.jpg Or stop and sit and just enjoy the atmosphere of this area http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1265.jpg Stockholm was our favorite city on our trip Cheers Len
kruzseeka Posted June 9, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 9, 2011 And don't miss the sail-away especially if there's likely to be a sunset! It's magical and lasts for about two hours. It would be such a shame to be busy getting ready for dinner and miss out on one of the highlights of a Baltic cruise. Enjoy! P.S. I'd endorse the recommendation for the Vasa Museum and you'd have time to wander round Gamla Stan and see the Palace. We visited City Hall which was very interesting - but that's perhaps something for a second visit.
Cornishpastyman1 Posted June 9, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 9, 2011 From my day there I did this which has a few sights of central Stockholm. You can walk to Vasa in about 20-25 minutes from the usual coach drop-off point by the Opera House if you are coming from Nynasham  Once in the Vasa Museum head straight for the information desk to find out the time of the next showing (in your language) of the terrific 25-minute film of how Vasa was found, raised and restored. Then go to the theatre 5 minutes before 'showtime'. There is also a 20 minute guided tour of the ship which is worth doing if you have the time. The story of Vasa
Bet & Peg Posted June 9, 2011 #6 Share Posted June 9, 2011 hampshirelad ~ I'd 2nd, 3rd and 4th the suggestion to see the Vasa - it certainly NOT an ordinary museum! Very interesting story for all ages about the ship. Galma Stan is also a fabulous area and not t be missed. If you can fit in the changing of the guard it'll be very interesting. Don't miss the little shops, cafes, and interesting steets - Len's (GiantFan13) photos are exactly what they look like! And the comment kruzseeka is SO important! You didn't mention what cruise line you're on, but if you're docking in the city, then you'll be sailing through the archipelago - hundreds of islands leading into Stockholm and a wonderful experience! Last year we docked at 10am but were in the archipelago earlier than 6am, that's when I woke up and saw we were already sailing in it. Luckily we had an aft balcony so we had bk there watching the islands go by and the ships following us in a line - gread views as we were in a channel that zigged and zagged around the islands. You also sail out of the archipelago so also an opportunity to experience some fabulous views! Have a GREAT cruise!!! and enjoy Stockholm - it's an exceptional city!!! SouthamptonBoy Posted June 9, 2011 #7 Share Posted June 9, 2011 Many thanks to all those who have posted. It really helps when you start from a position of no knowledge about the port
Giantfan13 Posted June 9, 2011 #8 Share Posted June 9, 2011 Please listen to Peg and do not miss the Archipelago sailing. I believe all crusie lines except NCL will sail thru it, either leaving and arriving, in Stockholm. Even if you have a balcony, try and get up on deck to just view the entire experience. The back of the ship is probably best. Find a nice table at the restaurant that is set up back there, grab a snack and just sit and enjoy. It really is a 360 degree sight, so sitting on your balcony will only get you half a view. Here are a few pics of the Archipelago http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1344.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster1343.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1342.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1341.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europept1338.jpg And a quick video http://s834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/?action=view¤t=europemaster1374.mp4 Cheers Len
