cascdav Posted March 18, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 18, 2005 Don't worry, both are available in abundance in all ports, however, do your best to make sure they are AUTHENTIC, especially the Silver.
seabreezer Posted March 18, 2005 #3 Share Posted March 18, 2005 Make sure the vanilla doesn't have any additives. There should only be vanilla extract, alcohol, water and sugar - not corn syrup. I never could find one without chemicals or corn syrup. Prices for the best vanilla (Madagascar) are coming down anyway.

Chele60 Posted March 21, 2005 #5 Share Posted March 21, 2005 Be careful of purchasing silver. It should be stamped somewhere with either ".925", ".980", or "taxco". The stamp may be quite small on some pieces, but should be clearly visible to the naked eye. Do not take anyone's word that something is actual silver without a marking. As for vanilla? Look at the ingredients and see if there are any additives. If the ingredients are in Spanish, these are what should appear on the label: extracto de la vainilla, alcohol, agua y azúcar. It is pretty difficult to find vanilla with sugar any more, though. You might have to really search. Have fun!
Bob7 Posted March 21, 2005 #6 Share Posted March 21, 2005 We are looking to purchase a silver necklace and some vanilla extract. Any suggestions appreciated? The best brand of vanilla is supposed to be Orlando, which we bought on our cruise last week. It doesn’t have the additives the people above mentioned, but costs more money than the other brands. Cheapest was 120 pesos for 1 litre in the local shops in Puerto Vallarta behind the strip, other places it was 140 or 150 pesos. The company has a long history in the business, they grow their own vanilla beans. And we found out jewelry often has the silver .925 or .9xx stamp and is still junk, it’s no guarantee anymore :-(
seabreezer Posted March 21, 2005 #7 Share Posted March 21, 2005 Beware even the silver with the small faint 925 stamp. Much of it is not solid silver now and the stamp can easily be added.
