Designing the oasis of the seas

Recommended Posts

Designed by Jan Akerblad with his firm Arkitektbyran, located in Gothenburg, Sweden, the ship was designed with the knowledge of what’s going on in the world and taking land-based concept on board.

They originally had an idea of having glass-bottom aqueducts running over Central Park. The idea was to be able to swim from the pool on one side of the ship to the pool on the other side. It was rejected by Royal Caribbean.

Early in the design stages the Flow Riders would have been in the family area of the boardwalk. This became the amphitheatre so it was moved up to the top deck. This created some challenges with the weight of the water and more movement at the higher deck. The designers had to compensate for weight by cutting the amount of teak wood used, lighter weight deck covers, and watching the size and depth of the pool.

Getting into ports they designed a telescope funnel allowing it to get into New York, lifeboats that will also be used as tenders can hold 400 passengers.

Wind turbulence took a lot of work. Ship traveling at 22knots with a 25 mile hour wing can cause a lot of wind across the deck. This would have been a problem in Central Park making it uncomfortable to sit outside. With the use of a computer they were able to make sure they had the right wind screens and features.

A cover over Central park was not needed, if heat builds up computer controlled ventilation will take over. Plant species will be carefully selected with replacements when needed gotten at each port.

The idea of having seven neighborhoods is to spread passenger around the ship and not be crowded into one or two areas.
