Accessing free wifi in Barcelona or an app to locate free wifi?

I read that there are apps to download ahead of time that will allow me to find free wifi hot spots in Barcelona.

 

Can anyone link or recommend an app or a place to access free wifi? I do not believe my hotel offers free wifi.

 

And finally, Just to make sure I'm doing this correctly:

 

1) I need to turn my iphone to airplane mode to avoid data charges while in Europe.

2) When in airplane mode, I will need to manually turn on wifi. This will allow me to access free wifi and avoid charges.

 

Anything else I'm missing?

We just got back and were able to get it at McDonalds (they also have free bathrooms) as well as from unpassword protected apts. We would just walk down the street until we found access. We carried our IPAD in Spain, Italy and France and it wasn't that difficult. I was told you could get it from Starbucks but you might have to purchase something in order for them to give you the password. We couldn't just get it from out in front of their store.

We got 45(?) min free access at the Starbucks on Via Laietana near the cathedral in exchange for our beverage purchase. Just ask the barista for the code.

 

I also have this app on my iphone, but since you need to burn roaming data to use it, it wasn't that useful on our travels.

The city provides a free WiFi service. It is speed limited (256 kbps) by law. It is intended as a browse only service but if you want to and are semi-tecky you can work around that.

Hi, Cheryl! Just saw a picture of you yesterday as I was reviewing some from last year's Alaskan adventure.

 

When will you be in Barcelona? Assuming not on the cruise we are taking, as I haven't seen you on our roll call. But if before ours, would love to hear your recommendations.
