How does the rotation work? For example is Captain Johnny at home after they switch off? I wouldn't think that he is just hanging out on board, catching a few rays. Do you know when they would switch rotation, for example 8 weeks on, 8 weeks off? We sailed with Captain Johnny through Hurricane Sandy, and were very impressed with how he kept us well informed, especially through his own TV channel. We are back on Allure in early January and if would be nice to sail with him as Captain again.

They go home and be just like anybody else. They become husbands again, dads, grandfathers...they catch up on the "honey-do" list, they travel. they do what you're doing right now. Being on the ship is their work. What do you do when you get home from work at night?

 

Capt Johnny prefers longer rotations (11 weeks). Rotations can be anywhere from 8-12 weeks, emergencies or unusual circumstances can make a rotation longer or shorter.

By chance, does anyone know what will happen to Captain Flemming Nielsen when the Mariner goes to Asia for good? im assumming that the crew will not speak English for the Asian vacationers.

 

The front of the house (Hotel Dept) will be bi-lingual Asians. The back of the house (Marine Dept) will be English speaking. English is the universal maritime language. So being in Asia does not mean that the Bridge Team have to speak Cantonese or Mandarin. Its the other way around! The harbor master office has to have someone that speaks English!

They stay on and rotate as usual. The captain and hotel director are as busy or busier than usual making sure the 24/7 mission is accomplished perfectly.

Yes, they will help where needed and oversea the entire operation

 

When Radiance went in for enhancements, Captain Clause put on overalls and worked right along with everyone else.

Wow! Capt. Michel showed up 5 days into dry dock? That's so odd since Capt. Karin specifically said she would be there for dry dock and for the first Dubai cruises. I hadn't noticed when you posted the change. Isn't that sort of unusual for them to change during dry dock like that?

LOL, who said my rotation date was right? I was just counting 10 weeks from the last date! So Capt Karin is still master? When does Serenade's dry dock end?

The timing would appear correct. But with all the talk about whether or not she was "allowed" to be captain in that region, I thought I'd ask her about her scheduling. It sure sounded like she'd continue on a bit longer. Although I'll admit it was a bit like pulling teeth - being a non-dentist. :) She's just not the easiest one to get info from.

 

Of course the Dubai cruises go on until April of next year so she'll eventually make it there at some point - assuming she doesn't go to another ship. Nothing surprises me anymore.

We did not sail on Vision out of San Pedro -- you must have us confused with someone else. I think last week's JW cruise is the first time we have met.

For all of you who have fond memories of cruising with Erik, and who have wondered where he might be today, I am pleased to report that he has accepted a shoreside posting with the Norwegian Maritime Authority in Haugesand, Norway, effective Dec 10.

 

I wish him well in his new position, and thank him for 10 years of great cruise memories on Sovereign ,Majesty, Serenade, Voyager, Freedom, and Brilliance.
