Rare northwoods2 Posted March 21, 2005 #1 Share Posted March 21, 2005 We are considering an overnight trip to Nome (or maybe Barrow). Anyone done this? Is it worth it? We want to do something different and have a couple extra days after Denali and are trying to figure out what to do. We have considered a backcountry lodge but haven't found one that works for us. Any other suggestions to see the 'real' Alaska.

travelgirl87 Posted March 22, 2005 #3 Share Posted March 22, 2005 Hi there. Here's a "cut and paste" from another thread about the topic: "We also did an overnight tour (travel by Alaska Air) to Kotzebue (within the Arctic Circle) and Nome through a NANA (North Arctic Native Assn) tour company. Highlights included a trip to visit a man that has run the Iditarod to learn what the racers carry in their sleds for the trip (and to get some quality cuddle/photo op time with those huskies), a tundra walk, learning about how to find gold in the sand on Nome's beaches (my hubby found more in the sand he picked up for free than we got panning with pre-seeded gold at a tourist place), and visiting with one of the tribal elders to learn about life years ago. I highly recommend this trip as an alternative option to a Cruisetour. Princess sells this as an add-on or you can book it yourself (as we did) but you'll probably end up with the same folks as NANA runs life in that neck of the woods." Hope this is helpful to you. Rare northwoods2 Posted March 22, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted March 22, 2005 Thanks for the information. We have been wavering between Nome and Barrow and we have decided to go to Barrow. Now I just need to see if we can get it booked.
