zelda100 Posted July 12, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 12, 2011 I'm wondering if anyone here can help - we want to travel from UK (eg Southampton, Dover) to USA (east coast) by boat in Aug 2012. The main reason is my husband is very anti airplanes, but I also think it would be a fun thing to do. We have two children (they will be 4 and 2 then). Traditional cruises (Queen Mary, Cunard) seem very expensive - and their dates don't appear to suit ours. Are there any non-cruise boat options that you know of? I've heard about travelling freight: how do I find these companies? Are they suitable for young children? Many thanks for any advice.

I am not sure if a freighter will be a lot cheaper than the liners, but you can get more information on routes, schedules, and prices at http://www.travltips.com or http://www.freigherworld.com. Usually the minimum age for children is one year old. There are no doctors aboard. The schedules are not carved in stone, and you need to be flexable. I made a web page about my experience with freighter passengers when I was a captain. http://www.captainmcd.com
