Royal Gazette: Heritage Wharf Structural Issues

A part of the $60 million cruise ship pier at Dockyard is visibly “moving like a loose tooth” and warping, and its accompanying thruster wall is showing clear signs of damage.

A source claims to have seen engineers surveying the site last Friday, sparking concerns that the taxpayer may be liable to pay for repairs on a two-year-old facility which cost 54 percent more to build than its original $39 million contract price.

On viewing pictures of the damage, an American marine engineer who was involved in the project said safety of ships and passengers would be at risk if it was not dealt with as a matter of urgency. Government did not respond by press time yesterday to our questions about the nature of the damage, who would pay for repairs and whether a performance bond, which provides insurance for construction projects, was in place.

That is a bit concerning we are scheduled to arrive on Enchantment on 8/8. Any idea if Royal or NCL typically docks at Heritage?

There are the two docks at the Dockyard. If they have to close Heritage for repairs during the season it would be a concern. Some ships would have to tender.

The port schedule has NCL's Dawn arriving on 8/7 at Heritage Wharf, departing 8/9.

The port schedule has the RCI's Enchantment arriving on 8/8 at King's Wharf, departing 8/9.

Hoo boy! We arrive on the 10th, and since we are on NCL, I think we will be at that dock! We will have a big problem as my parents have limited mobility and would have trouble with tendering!

Today's Gazette has a further article. The repairs can wait, there is no danger. They an keep using the dock and repair it in the off season.
