Scooter breakdowns

We have rented scooters for DW for many of our land and sea travels. One of the reasons we do rent is in case of an equipment malfunction, not to be confused with a wardrobe malfunction. We did have such an issue in Las Vegas and the rental company quickly responded with a new scooter for her use. How do they take care of a problem on a cruise ship? Is there a stock of spare equipment on the ship? Or maybe the ships staff repairs the boo-boo.

This is simply a question and not an implication of any problems, real or imagined.

Thanks so much for your responses.

I had a mechanical problem with my first scooter rental aboard Westerdam in May 2009 and the ship fixed it for me free of charge:)

The cruise line does not rent the scooters nor does the cruise line have extra scooters on board each ship. You rent the scooters through a private company not associated or owned by the cruise line and they only deliver the number of scooters contracted for by the individual passengers. If it's a minor issue the cruise line will do there best to help you. However the cruise line is are not obligated to assist you in repair since the cruise line is not the rental provider. Though some people have said that the cruise line has repaired it for them free ,there are also times when the cruise line refuses to attempt to repair it and or charge you for the repair. Also the cruise line may refuse to attempt to repair and they have every right to do so.

Also note that if it's a rental you are totally responsible for all damages as per your contract if it's rules users fault . If the scooter breaks down and the cruise line attempted to repair it causing further damage to the scooter you are fully responsible to the rental company for cost of replacement or repair... the cruise line cannot be held liable because you took it upon yourself to have the cruise line attempt to repair the scooter which was not authorized by the rental company.

If the scooter breaks down you should call the rental company as soon as possible to notify them of the matter. Depending on where you are cruising there's always the longshot that the rental company might be able to switch it out at another port. But it needs to be stressed this is a longshot as the scooter rental company does not have offices in every port. The rental companies generally will give you are refund if the scooter fails. Many people who rent scooters also bring either a walker or folding wheelchair with them just as a back up. I bring my rollator with a fold down seat.

My DH's scooter broke down and the cruise staff would not even look at it, no way, no how. They did loan us a wheelchair, thank goodness for that, but it was not much of a vacation for me, DH is 225 lbs, and was no help what-so-ever, he just sat like the king he is! This upcoming cruise will be with his scooter plus his walker! Lesson learned.

MedicKen; We have rented scooters for DW for many of our land and sea travels. One of the reasons we do rent is in case of an equipment malfunction, not to be confused with a wardrobe malfunction....

Ken:

I rent with Care Vacations. While I have never had a problem with a scooter rental, I pay a little extra per day to cover equipment malfunction or if the scooter is stolen. If a malfunction occurs, you call the toll free number given to you with your rental contract and a rep. with troubleshoot it with you. If it cannot be repaired, they have a replacement waiting at the next port. Same if it is [GOD forbid] stolen. Like the other poster said, don't let a ship employee work on it prior to you calling the rental company. It could void your contract.

If you rent through CareVacations. You can go to the Pride Mobility website and print the page from the manual that references troubleshooting for the model that you're renting. Just remember to pack it wikth your cruise documents . Here's the link to the Pride Owners Manual Website. Just scroll down to the model that you're renting and click on it. This is the same information that the CareVacations Rep works from when trouble shooting over the phone. So it doesn't hurt to take the information with you. For reasons unknown, CareVacations does not put this information in the back pouch on the scooter.

we rented a scooter from care vacations and it broke down late at night. One of the oasis workers brought us another one that night. They have to storesome extras because we were at sea.

The cruise line is not required to store extra scooters because you are at sea. All scooters are rented through an outside source that other than approving the company to come on board the ship to deliver the scooter the Cruise line has no other involvment. Furthermore Carevacations does not deliver extra scooters to be held in storage on the ship for use in the event of breakdowns. CareVacations only delivers the number of scooters contracted for by passengers for that specific sailing. You lucked out due to one of 3 things :

  1. carevacations did not pick up all scooters from the previous cruise prior to embarkation of the next cruise. Therefore the cruise line had to remove them from the respective cabins before the new passengers boarded.
  2. Passengers contracting a scooter canceled their cruise and forgot to cancel delivery of the scooter. So the cruise line placed it in storage after delivery for pickup at the disembarkation port.
  3. Passengers contracting a scooter from Carevacations missed embarkation and the scooter had already been delivered to the cabin. Therefore the cruise line placed it in storage for pickup at the disembarkation port.

Bottom line : anyone renting a scooter should not expect the cruise line to have a replacement scooter available in the event of a breakdown.

Hi--nothing to rely on, but on one cruise we asked for a meet-and-greet of "Wheelers & Walkers". It was a lot of fun--we shared tips on shore excursions and ship's services-- and when someone had a problem with their scooter, it turned out one of the other people in the group had the spare part and know-how to fix the problem!
