Walking into Falmouth

We were thinking about just walking into the town of Falmouth. The town looks interesting. Has anyone done that?

I have driven thru it on the way out on an excursion.....there was nothing I saw that would make me want to go walking thru at all.

One of our problems with alot of Caribbean ports is that after a few years, they are all interchangeable. You can buy the same thing in St Maartens and Cozumel. The only difference is the name of the country.

So we want to go there before it becomes a cookie cutter of the others. Anyone gone outside the port area on their own?

  • 1 month later...

My wife & I just got off Freedom of the Seas last Sunday...and we had a port in Falmouth last Wednesday. I was not impressed and this was my least favorite stop. We pulled into port and, granted, I didn't know what to expect. This was our first cruise. The day before we were in Labadee and loved it there. We didn't pre-book any excursions for Jamaica, and were just wanting to walk around the city and see some historical sights. The port was very nice...the part that Royal Caribbean had built up, and is still under some construction... But once you leave that area and into the city, you are instantly mobbed by taxi drivers, shop keepers, venders, etc. They wouldn't take "no" for an answer and hounded us, followed us, etc. Once we would lose one driver/shop keeper/vender, another one would attach themselves to us insisting we needed to buy/hire them. We walked around a block or two with one driver that insisted on following us, no matter how much we told him we didn't want to take his taxi and that we were just wanting to explore the city on our own. We insisted he go back and try to get someone who would want his services, but he refused and continued to harass us. We made it back to the port...feeling bummed. I really wanted to get out and see the sights - the historical church, the court house, etc. So we found a kiosk in port that ran a historical trolley tour of Falmouth...which was like $15/person...and 30 minutes long...which really wasn't worth it... It was a bit depressing seeing it... That experience maybe for some people...but not for me...

Thanks for the update. We are thinking about walking in the port area. DH will get some jerk chicken and then hang out at the ship.

Yeah, the port area is very nice and festive. Guys on stilts, reggae music... We ate some jerk chicken and breadfruit, and had a Red Stripe. The guys on stilts insisted we get a picture with them even though my wife didn't want to (she's got a weird phobia of people on stilts, like I have a weird phobia of people in costumes/masks), and insisted on a tip for doing so...not bad, but I guess that's how they make their living. I gave them about $4 or $5. After our trolley tour and lunch in port, we just spent the rest of the afternoon on the ship and enjoyed a nap and a uncrowded ship.

Yes we did it, well we took the provided bus in to town but just walked back.Falmouth is a qaint coastal town and during our visit there were lots of cruise folks doing the same as us.Suggest taking the bus in to town and check your bearings for the walk back (weather permitting). Seems they have an abundance of baked goods displayed in the bakery windows. Some hilly streets and nice little pubs we enjoyed it and am sure you will too.
