Halifax, Nova Scotia

Recommended Posts

We will be arriving in Halifax for one day on the Enchantment of the Seas in July.

We would like to do one shore excursion and then seeing the sites on our own.

Is there anything within walking distance from where we dock? To shop or eat?

Which shore excursions would you suggest?

Thank you!

Get a copy of the visitors guide: http://www.halifaxinfo.com since you have time.. it's invaluable. Love Halifax (in fact going back for a couple of days in November).. There is a ton of stuff to do in walking distance of where you will dock. You can get to the Citadelle which overlooks the harbor and is a couple of blocks up hill from harborwalk. Along the harborwalk you will find numerous restaurants -- great seafood -- local vendors offering harbor cruises which are 1 to 1-1/2 hours and well worth it IMHO (check to see if Bluenose II is in port when you are there and tour this lovely harbor aboard the sailing ship). THe Maritime Museum of the Atlantic IMHO is an exellent facility and well worth touring. Lots of neat shops and when we were there on a cruise in '03, a local craft/souvenir market at Pier 21 where you dock!

We did a short tour with a company that has London cabs when we were there but understand that they are only doing that for groups now.. it was relatively inexpensive and a good way to see the town.

Host Caroline...... Tell me about the Maritime Museum. This is where they have some of the Titanic pieces, right?

Maritime Museum had some Titanic pieces, a wonderful photo exhibit and a short film also on Titanic. They have two-three vessels docked right out front in the harbor you can tour (can't recall the names... I think a minesweeper and >????) on your own.. The entire museum is excellent IMHO and has things that will interest children too (like the docked boats, Titanic things and the ammo boat that blew up in the Harbor back in the 1900's (1920-something I believe) that just about leveled half the town unfortuantely although you would never know it today!!

When we were in Halifax on the HAL Rotterdam (5/03) we managed to get to several shops, the Discovery Center children's museum (we had no kids with us, but it's great for adults), public garden (free, and near the citadel), citadel, immigration museum (at the pier), and Maritime museum. All terrific, we didn't need a shore excursion and we needed only one cab, to the top of the garden/citadel hill, then walked down hill the rest of the way. I can't tell you about Titanic relics, since we are not Titanic buffs.

The shore excursion web site is interesting, but only the Peggy's Cove excursion is under 8 hours. On our next trip to Halifax, on the Radisson Navigator this coming September, we're scheduled to be in town for 9 hours, so an 8 to 10 hour excursion won't fit. Maybe you'll be in Halifax for a longer period.

The Maritime Museum's ship is the Acadia, a 1913 Canadian Coast Guard vessel. It's worth the visit. The HMCS Sackville, a corvette, is docked nearby but is not part of the museum. The museum exhibits are very well done, particilarly the Titanic exhibit (includes a deck chair and pieces of the grand staircase that were brought ashore by the salvage vessels), the Halifax Explosion exhibit, and the section on wrecks near Halifax. (There is also a Theodore Tugboat exhibit inside the museum that the little kids love!)

We walked from the dock along the waterfront to the Maritime Museum, had lunch in a restaurant on the waterfront, and then walked up to the Citadel. There was plenty to do without an arranged tour - and lots we didn't have time for but would still like to do!

  • 1 month later...

We were there two summers ago. We went on the harbour hopper - this is a land sea tour. Really fun and different and you will see a lot. We booked it ourselves when we got there - there is a booth on the wharf/dock area.
